Alright so I got to wondering while in another post about who here actually believes in true love? I mean this place is dominated by males and society tells us that men are less likely to believe in such romantic thoughts. So lets see if we can prove society wrong or if maybe( I know this is not very reliable or scientific) it is true to apply such a "rule" to men, at least here in OT.

I'm asking about "true love" in the sense of "soul mates" "ones other half" "love lasting for eternity"...this kind of stuff, usually the kind of love I hear women telling me they are looking for, and the kind of love that the media sells the public.

Also I'm female so my answer wouldn't help in this very unscientific data collection, but I'm pretty sure my answer is currently no I do not believe in True love.

"True love" as in "love lasts forever"? Nope, I do not. Before I actually fell in love, I thought it did, but now I don't... and that doesn't make it a bad thing. I can appreciate the love I have a lot more knowing that at any one point something could happen and it would lessen or disappear.

EDIT: I should add some clarification. I'm not expecting the negative outcome to happen, only would be willing to accept it if it did. I remain optimistic that it does not happen and try my hardest to prevent it from happening, but ultimately, accept that it could.

Well true love may be real. But one's true love toward another person in that sense must take time. And I think that it could be between more than 1 person. Being if you become a widow and find another true love for example.

"True" love? I'm not sure. I mean, no, I don't think so. This would imply that for every man, there's a woman, and there's not. This would also imply that one person is "better" than another.

Wait? You're a girl that doesn't believe in all that true love nonsense? Shocking. Our current state of romantic perception in western society has been largely influenced by moving making that started in the 1900's and continues to this day..

Not at all, in the magical fairytale, "you are destined to be together" kind of way. Love is a culmination of a lot of different feelings and experiences that you want to share.

No... People are in a perpetual state of change. The 'you' you are today is different from the 'you' you are tomorrow -all your experiences shape the person you are and the person you will become -same experiences and changes are large and some are small, but all affect and change 'you' The same goes for your partner So the love you have today is not the love you will have tomorrow (even if it only changes by the an infinitely small amount) -people either grow together or grow apart...and nothing lasts forever b/c nothing ever stays the same

It's rare, but possible. It really goes against a lot of human nature, and many people blow the word "love" out of proportion. I think it exists, but as to "what true love is"? I think there is no answer to that question, other than individual experience on that matter.

True love to me is when I realized I can be perfectly fine just by myself but would much rather spend my time with a certain someone.

Yes, I believe that "true" love can exist. If two people really love each other very much, nothing will break them apart. I also believe that true love is not restricted by gender.

I'd consider myself a romantic. I believe that true love exists for sure. I see a recurring pattern in this thread, however - people are stating "true" in the sense that it lasts "forever". I do not believe this is what the words mean. I believe that 'true love' is being content, not wanting to be with anyone else. Almost like a dream come 'true' - if you know what I mean.

Yes but in no way in the same way popular culture defines it. "True love" is not an emotional state between two people but a sacrificial union between two people who are willing to stick with it for the sake of the other. Yes there will be times of heightened emotions towards one another but even during the worst of times, they stick with one another. It's when you love him or her even if he or she does not deserve it. The reason why "true love" so rarely exists is because few people are willing to truly sacrifice themselves for the sake of another person.

True love is not when two people live together with euphoric emotions during the "good times" in life. True love is when an old man takes care of his wife with Alzheimer's day and night, year after year. As Scripture says, it is when a man is willing to lay down his life for his wife just as Christ gave his life to the church.

As in two people who are perfect for eachother? Sure, though it's extremely rare. Some couples have a certain chemistry that others don't. But even those couples aren't perfect. Very few are.

Neurologically speaking, it has been found that there are different stages of love. "True love", which i assume you meant was a love that will be deep and everlasting happens when actual changes happen in some areas of the brain both hormonally and physically which seem to only react with anything to do with the loved one. So basically in a "true love" one would have a pretty damn big part of his brain specially dedicated to his/her loved one. So physically speaking, to change a brain back to normal (stop loving a person if psychologically speaking) would be almost impossible. Yes, true love does exist if what you meant was a basically everlasting deep-love, if you thought of it in a more "fairy-talish" everyone has someone else special in the world than true love may not exist. Add: Most relationships end after 4 years/on fourth year. Also the thing is that both psychologically and physically speaking, when you "love" someone or even like something for a longer period of time, it is only because you have-to varying degrees-become accustomed to it/them. You can somewhat see that breaking up whatever type of relationship is a lot like breaking a habit or in some cases breaking an addiction...

?What?? You should make a move man, I mean if you tried and failed would be better than secretly loving someone and no-one else for the rest of your life.

There is no such thing as a "true love", just 'love' to a certain degree. I mean you might think that the current person might be your "true love", but then it's the next person, and the next person etc.

Sure, but don't think it's an entitlement waiting to be cashed in. I reckon it's something that's most likely to happen when you're more concerned about finding other things that you need to be happy.
