The chance of a meteor/comet (or whatever the techincal term is) hitting the Earth is pretty low. Mostly they just skirt off of the atmosphere and make a brilliant light display. I'll admit that chunks of space rock do hit the Earth but they are only big enough to leave a really insignificantly small crater.

There is supposed to be a comet that will hit us soon, I can't remember the exact date.

True but its been 50+ million years sense the last one hit.. If one of significant size hit us we would be screwed.. They had a special on this on the science channel.. Any one for instance with in 500 miles of the impact would be incinerated..

One is supposed to head our way in a few years (unsure of the date). It'll come by so close that it'll dip underneath the comms. satelites we have set up. If we don't die by 2012 it'll swing by again and may hit us.

Remember the Simpsons episode when Bart discovered a comet barreling towards them, but it burnt up in the atmosphere and was really no bigger than a tiny dog's brain?

That's what I think of when I think of comets.

That asteroid heading our way is called Apothis. It was thought it would hit us but they now think it'll barely miss us. That's because predicting where these things go is not an exact science. It's thought that it may even come closer than some of our geosynch satellites.
