So my dad was watching Halloween (2007) and...

I just don't understand why the horror genre is so popular. Not only did the dark and dirty tone depress me, the movie (and the genre in general) feels like little more than an excuse for excessive blood, gratuitous language and lots and lots of unnecessary nudity. How someone can watch this for an hour and a half is beyond me, and how someone can enjoy it is even more of a head scratcher. I know this isn't a good movie, but in a genre all about killing teenagers, how much better can it be? Does anyone else feel the same way I do about horror movies? I think we need less of them and more suspense movies. At least suspense movies can be scary while keeping the violence level low.

most if not all horror movies these days are 100% crap. if you want good horror, you need to look back to 80s and older.

You're watching the wrong horror movies. They're not all like that steaming pile of cow manure...

There were some good, early horror movies, but nowadays they are all awful.

Exactly. My dad says he likes Saw because it's interesting in a sick way, which is somewhat acceptable (but not really), but people getting cut up in a dark room isn't the kind of movie I'm interested in.

They shouldn't be called horror movies, more like cheesy disgusting movies. Find ones that weren't allowed in theaters, or b list ones, those are pretty good.

Completely agreed. I don't see how people find enjoyment in being scared.

I don't like horror films that dwell on torture specifically. So movies like Hostel are just not my cup of tea at all. I am not even sure if I want to place them into the same genre as a traditional horror film.

What I like about horror films is the ability to experience the fear of a critical situation without having to invest anything more than a few hours of my emotion into it. Once it's over, life goes back to normal. It's sort of like skydiving or bungee jumping -- I get to experience the adrenaline rush of certain death without the actual "death" part.

The original Halloween had style and less gratuitous violence and is considered a classic...not the crappy Rob Zombie remake. Try watching some good horror movies before you condem a entire genre.

I honestly just like watching the new Halloween and sort just because of all the blood and gore and such. I find it entertaining. :) I hate all the Saw's their making and they should have just stopped at Saw 3.... Hostel was pretty brutal and the second one was somewhat lame compared to the first.

The best horrors were the ones from the 60, 70s and 80s. Films like Psycho, The Birds, Nightmare On Elm Street 1, the original Halloween to name but a few. Very few modern horrors are any good, a few stand out, but not many. Too much violence, too much CGI and showing the villian too soon, not enough suspense and the kind of horror that has you cringing from either how wonderfully cheesey it is or how scary.

That movie kept me entertained for the duration. Sure you know what's going to happen, but that's part of the fun.

Meh, I like horror movies, even the "bad" ones. Although, I'm not a fan of movies that revolve around torture, such as Hostel or Saw.

Yeah, pick the worst of the worst to represent the genre. Logical. Saw, Hostel, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw remakes, American remakes of asian horror....all garbage. On the other hand, The original Shutter, Jacobs Ladder, The Orphanage, 28 Days Later, The Host, A Tale of Two Sisters....top notch stuff.

I'm way into horror, but Halloween (2007) is a poor example of the genre.

Most of what OP is describing is just Rob Zombies art style. And yes, there ARE good horror movies that have been released is the past years. 1 of which is a Swedish film, Let The Right One In. Check it out. Another is, though I have not seen it yet, Paranormal Activity. It looks to be promising.

Horror movies = stupid, useless and dumb. And people who are such horror enthusiast always say "Oh you can't take blood" or "You're scared" Um... No, it's stupid, boring and not scary at all.

That is what a lot of recent horror films seem like today but it is all about suspense, atmosphere and some of the greats are about taking you into the mind of a serial killer, stuff like Psycho and Henry: Portrait of a Serial killer.

Give me a decent thriller any day, and I'll happy watch it with the knowledge that I won't be disgusted like I would be during a horror film.
