Uhm...if she appears to be abused then why don't you do something about it...i'm not sure what would be appropriate in this situation..calling the police...or showing him what it's like...first though..make sure the allegations are true..
My roommate beat the crap out of his girlfriend one day when she was visiting. His girl wakes me up real early (like 6 or 7) in the morning crying with a nose bleed and says he hit her. I'm outrageously hungover and it wasn't anything I wanted to deal with at that moment. I get dressed and take the girl to my friends' house and dump the problem on them. I go back to the apartment and proceed to hand my roommate the ass kicking of his life (I already hated the kid, this was just a good reason). I then went back to sleep and I never saw the kid again. He had some company come get all his stuff and his parents gave me a rent check for the remaining months.
Man why didn't you get the girl and take her away? You should of pushed the jackass out the way and told him that u don't like the way he was acting up, instead of saying 'to chill out before anyone sees'. I have a feeling he was beating her back in HS too.
It's obvious this girl 'aint going to do nothing about it, 'till one day she snaps and kills him. Doesn't she have any family?

Something similar happened to me, Hoever it turned out to be a guy who just WANTED me to beat the **** outta my friend simply because my friend had pissed him off and he didn't have the balls to fight, Lets just say his face had a whole new look after essentially trying to make me beat up my best friend.
Keep on eye on them but i don't think you can really make a move until you see it for yourself. You could try talking to him about it but i can't see him admitting it.
He sounds like a nice guy..har har. Call the police or something. If you try to kick his ass he might just end up kicking your ass and then who will look a fool?
Make sure it's true first. If she looks all bruised up or something, then ask her what happened as if you honestly don't have a clue. If she tells you then immediately kick that dude's ass and let him know its for his own freaking good.
If she starts making excuses for it or lies about it, then be VERY careful how you act. You may give him more reason to be abusive to her. Hell, alert her parents or close friends of the situation. Don't go it alone otherwise she will simply run right back to him. Somehow, these abused women have a way of attaching themselves to their abusor. I've been through this and it all ended badly because I went in all bull-headed about it.

People are fortunate enough to have something I can't, yet they still choose to make careless decisions.

Smash his face in. Or get the police/his parents involved, that's probably the preferred way of dealing with it. There's no excuse for beating someone up like that.
Get police or parents involved, as said above. If you confront your friend, he may deny it and become more abusive, and if you confront the girlfriend, she may not want to admit that he beat her up out of fear or not wanting to see him get in trouble.

The only time it is excusable to strike a female is if she is literally trying to kill you. In every other situation it just makes you a despicable coward.

OT you should talk to her and convince her to get the cops involved. Let her know she shouldn't go back with him. Just be there for her. Even if you're not close to her you should be involved.
A lot of the people who abuse others generally act normally, but they have a very violent side that comes out when triggered. I would try and talk to him about it as a first step.
DO NOT personally get involved with this. I've seen situations like these many times. If you fight your friend you will more than likely go to jail. Call the police anonymously if you want to feel better about it. More than likely though they will be back together shortly and even if he gets arrested she WILL NOT testify against him.
What I don't understand is why these girls continuosly go back to these guys that beat them.

Anyway, abuse is abuse and, regardless of who is doing it, they need to be stopped. I would've asked the girl if she's OK and see if you could grab some evidence. While you do that, I would get the girl to stay with someone she trusts as protection then you can grab your evidence and get some officers to look into the case. ;D
