She told me about 10 minutes ago while she was sitting on a chair very still like; that about an hour ago she was seeing these weird images in her head, telling her not to leave the house. (we were planning to go somewhere around 1) She said she started seeing pictures of our house on fire, us in a car crash, and other crazy things, all while hearing police and ambulance sirens going off outside. She thought they were just weird thoughts popping into her head, so she went on doing other things around the house. That's when about 30 minutes later she said that she started having weird "shakes" inside her body, kinda like goosebumps, only INSIDE of her body. About 10 minutes after that, I heard her calling my name out, to come quick. When I came into the living room, she was laying down on the couch, looking around, as if looking for me. She told me she was very lightheaded, so I fetched her some water. She said she was very nauseous, and felt like she was going to pass out any second. Me and my sister sat there for about 20 minutes comforting her, trying to calm her down, and it seemed to work, since right now she seems to be fine, but I'll wait and see.

Anyway, do you think her weird thoughts have anything to do with not leaving the house and suddenly getting sick for any reason?

Notes:

  • All she had for breakfast this morning was a cup of coffee and some toast I believe, so it's most likely not something she ate.
  • My mother is 50 years of age.
  • She hasn't had an attack like this in about 5 years.
  • She described her thoughts as strange and unusually realistic.

What do you think?

"She hasn't had an attack like this in about 5 years." That means she gets them. If her last attack didn't result in some premonition that came true, then what makes you think this one will?

Nothing, I'm just saying. She didn't "see" things last time. And she doesn't "get them", these have been the only 2 times.

That doesn't sound like an anxiety attack. If she's hearing voices and seeing things then she may have psychosis, which may or may not have led to an anxiety attack.

Does she have low blood sugar? If so then she needs to eat more than what she did.

That's one of the things my mother thought it might be. All she did was drink some orange juice, nothing else.

I think you should forget going to a doctor, psychologist, or anyone who is actually QUALIFIED to give advice, and post about it on gamespot.

I'm working on my doctorate in psychology and it sounds like a panic attack; although, I would need more info to be sure. High anxiety can cause people to have visions of bad things happening etc which can escalate into panic. You said she has had them before, has she been to a physician or psychologist about these attacks?

No, she hasn't, only because this is only the 2nd time having an "attack".

I think it sounds more serious than an anxiety attack. Go see a doctor option is the best

I have had an anxiety attack before and I didn't see images in my head nor did I hear voices. Those two aspects don't sound like something that would be associated with an anxiety attack.

It doesn't seem to be a panic attack as well.

It's a Panic Attack, I have the diagnostic criteria right in front of me and I see clients all the time who have similar symptoms. I'm guessing she has a lot of generalized anxiety going on. If that is only the second one she has had, then I recommend that she tries to do things that help her relax and decrease her anxiety. You did the best thing by sitting with her and helping her realize that she was okay and that there were no imminent dangers. If it gets worse she should seek out some CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) which is relatively quick therapy that will help with the anxiety and keep it from escalating into panic.

I was wrong. So it is a panic attack.

Well, you should relax. According to the Linden Method, panic attacks are neither a physical illness nor a mental disorder. It's not even an illness at all. Those nauseous feelings and the premonition of impending doom she has are merely sensations, not symptoms. And it's not even a serious condition.

And NO ONE has died from panic attacks. No one has and no one will.
