http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/africa/12/09/nigeria.shell.cable/index.html?hpt=T2

Its not about saving troops lives or diplomats faces for criticizing world leaders haircut.

In case people dont know, shell and its oil explorations in nigeria have been ruining not just environment ,but kicking people out of their land and polluting rivers to a point people have to wash the fish they catch with soap to be able to eat it.

It is a known fact when a poor country finds oil it usually becomes even more empoverished and polluted.

If people think BP oil leak was bad, think about how Shell has been leaking oil in nigeria for years.

Huh, this little part is interesting:

An October 2009 cable quotes Ann Pickard, then-executive vice president for Shell companies in Africa, as saying Shell had "good sources." "... She said the GON (government of Nigeria) had forgoteen that Shell had seconded people to all the relevant ministries and that Shell consequently had access to everything that was being done in those ministries."

So Shell is basicly controlling the Nigerian Government if i read that right.

Does Nigeria even have laws to prevent that sort of thing? IIRC, US businesses have to follow foreign laws when conducting business in another country, but if there is no law about that, I don't see the problem (besides the fact that Nigeria isn't doing anything about the destruction of their land) Also Shell isn't even a US company...

In third world countries, making those laws are really hard. They need to attract MNCs to get foreign investments, but if they tighten the laws, it's going to scare them away. So either way, they lose, it's just matter of measuring the balance between environment and social infra development and economic development, which is extremely hard to do if your country is s*** poor and does not have political stability. China is a case like this. They can't lower the environment standard and increase worker wage because that would mean huge blow to MNC which will then try to get out of the country and find a more suitable place to set up their factories elsewhere. But of course, China is definitely a lot better off than these LEDCs in Africa.

I do, and I also know this whole "he is going to cause deaths" thing is complete and utter crap. Even the Pentagon has admited he hasnt actually done any harm to anyone.

But more idiotic was the rest of that statement, as though the the Nobel Peace prize hasnt been given to those in positions of considerable power and the ability to do extensive damage.

Is what they are doing Lawfully right? Yes , and thats what counts from a government perspective.

Is what they are doing Morally right? No , and thats what counts from a individuals perspective.

Law and Moral have split, even if originally they where supposed to represent the same. Justice.

Most governments have secrets. Does that make them "corrupt"? That is an extreme word to me.....while there are some corrupt dictatorships...I'm not willing to go so far as to say a government that is decent to it's citizens is corrupt. They may not play nice in foreign affairs.....but at that all countries have a me first attitude. When a country is in trouble...ie natural disaster....the US both government and citizens donate money. We send aid where needed. Have we engaged in some wars that were unnecessary Yes. Has collateral damage happened...yes. But we aren't the only ones with that problem. And when we are done we rebuild the country and leave. IE...they have their own government. Not all countries do that.

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] Corrupt? I haven't seen any actual corruption exposed. Terrorist is one who uses terror to achieve an objective. Hmm...LJS9502_basic

Revealing documents hidden by a government is now considered terorism? so if the documents exposing the acts are that scary, how heinous are the actual acts? and Assange is the terrorist.

Actually what I said is using terror to achieve an objective is what a terrorist does. You jumped on Assange's name....why is that?

why did you jump to US govt when i said corrupt government? hmm.. dont be stupid, you implied assange as i implied america.

I don't think I mentioned any government in that post you just quoted. So you are saying you meant the US? I said no names....you must think he is to apply his name to a definition.:)

[QUOTE="LJS9502_basic"] Considering he's talking about the law or lack of it...I don't see what your point is here.LJS9502_basic

not to be too personal or anything, but im not surprised about your opinion on that.

Is what they are doing Lawfully right? Yes , and thats what counts from a government perspective.

Is what they are doing Morally right? No , and thats what counts from a individuals perspective.

Law and Moral have split, even if originally they where supposed to represent the same. Justice.

You know nothing about me so don't assume. As far as moral rights.....there is no absolute. So the best a society can do is create laws.

the flaws is simply that the first laws were originally based on morals.

Morals might not be absolute, but laws have since grown and now they are corrupted.

they have moved from a realm of moral values to a realm of restrictions based on power.

That would be me. I hope you noticed I was being sarcastic. The reason I said the U.S. Government is becasue they are the only ones potentially willing to help (as well as have the power) to stop what's going on in Nigeria.

You think morals were better back then? No freakin way.....there were genocides, witchunts, dicatorships, etc back then, and you think it was better? Seriously? Dear god.....
