Just curious, how do you spell sulphur where you live? My university professor marked me off on an exam for writing Sulphur, he said it was wrong. The thing is, my family learned British English before they came here, and that is how sulphur is spelled. Then in America, it must have been one of the little language quirks that never got quite ironed out with us, because it's how my parents spell it (well, my mother, she's a chemical engineer), and I learned to spell it. So I just had a big debate over the differences of British English and American English, and that Sulphur should be a legitimate spelling as I was writing in "English" as is university policy. After some grumbling he gave me the points back after I agreed to spell it "properly" from now on lol. So for you, is it Sulphur or Sulfur? :)

I'm not sure I've ever spelled it before in my life for anything. I would spell it however spell check corrects it to after I spell it incorrectly. :P

IUPAC has already agreed on 'sulfur'. I'll go with the international spelling.

I think you got screwed for spelling it that way. I'm a chemistry professor and I would have marked it correct "sulfur" and "sulphur". I know that other countries spell differently.

And for me it's sulfur.

Sulphur. But maybe the ph sound is a bit difficult for your professor.

The UK only spelled it with a PH since the 14th century.

I have to go with what IUPAC says, sulfur is correct.

I always spell it as Sulphur. Then again I'm a citizen of a former British Imperial colony, and I learnt my chem through a British-based international "high school" programme.

Sulphur. Next thing you know you'll be getting points deducted for calling a "." a "full stop", spelling "neighbour", "colour" and "Aluminium" ... A professor should realise the differences between British English and the other stuff I care-not for.

Technical scientific spelling is sulfur, even if you speak British english. See for sulphur, the one spelling was introduced and accepted as the right one. My teacher went on about it for a bit. Anyway, in casual writing, I still spell it sulphur, cause that's what I perceive as right. But in tests you should spell it sulfur.

"Sulphur." Despite being born in America, and thus learning English in America, I tend to stick with the "British English" versions of words.
