Alright, did the TC read that article where it says that the archbishop has no credibility and is facing a hearing for those comments within his own church.
[QUOTE="Bourbons3"]Its not like it will actually be implemented.joeytentz
You don't know that for sure.
read the link for the love of God....it's sad that even the BBC has got the wrong end of the stick. He never suggested any sort of parallel legal system or anything like that, he was simply commenting on the way sharia law works within the faith.
In catholicism for example, you're not allowed to get a divorce. of course, legally you can still get divorced even if you are a catholic. same goes for sharia law. thats all he was saying.

Precisely. It's just pathetic when stories that hold such a political and social impact are reported in such a way to create hysteria. Then again, I'm not suprised. Xenophobia against those of Islamic nations, as well as the fear of Islam is a subject that sells real well in our countries. It's quite pathetic actually.
[QUOTE="barabadwan"]It won't happen, hell, even most Middle Eastern Countries don't follow Sharia Law.

Actually, no Muslim countries uphold Sharia law. Not even Saudia Arabia.
Actually that's not true. Saudi, Pakistan, Malaysia and Indonesia practice Sharia. Maybe not entirely but mostly.

Mostly, no. Some parts of their legal system may be influenced by Sharia Law, but as a whole, Sharia Law has not been practiced in any country for years. In fact, you really can't have a Sharia system without a Caliphate. Even Iran, which has their high governmental positions given to religious politicians, does not practice Sharia law.

Theyre still persecuting people based on their religious beliefs though, which is pretty much the same thing.

Well, thats another premise all together and irrelavent to the topic at hand.

Don't spread misinformation about Catholics. Catholics can and are allowed to divorce.

i was always under the impression that catholics believe that marriage is indissoluble. perhaps my wording was bad.under the eyes of the law they are allowed to divorce. however the catholic church will not recognise the divorce. they believe that once the marriage has been consummated, it is 'till death do us part.'
an annulment is possible, but divorce is not. that is the position of the catholic church as far as i am aware. am i mistaken?

Uh. No divorce is legal. The church recognizes divorce.
This was a debate here in the province of Ontario (Canada).
Here's the background:
It's not "law" but religious arbitration had existed within Ontario for certain matters, namely, family law, practiced mainly by orthodox Jews. For example, a Jewish couple would go to a rabbi for arbitration to come up with a divorce agreement, and that agreement would be reviewed by a government judge to make sure it was in conformity with Canadian law. They went there by choice, no one ever made all orthodox Jews choose religious arbitration.
When the same concept was being asked for by some (not all as many Muslims were against it) members of the Muslim community, there was a huge debate. Religious arbitration got banned for everyone.
Within the Muslim community there were huge divides - for, against, and people not taking a position but unhappy with the process (why did it become such a huge thing only when Muslims were involved? Jewish people had been doing it for years)
