At 17, you should be happy with whatever you get as long as it moves.

Under $20,000?  How about an E46 BMW 325i?  If you get a 2003 or older, it should definitely be under that limit.  Meets your requirements easily.

RX8's have rotary engines, which are pretty much as drastically different as you can get. They require specialized mechanics (who charge more), and did allegedly have problems, at least in the RX7. Are you sure you want RWD, i.e. do you live somewhere that it snows? :D RWD is great in the summer and sooo painful in the winter - I get by on AWD now, best of both worlds! :D

Nah I don't live in the snow, but I just hate FWD cars. And also I've heard that the RX8's use the RENESIS rotary, which is supposed to be very reliable? Not really sure, I don't know much about rotary and their reliability.

if you're gonna get a used... make sure its recent like a fwe years old to say the least. My parents bought a 7 year old car 6 years ago and they had to pay more than double on getting it fixed than when they only bought it at $6k. :x

And I know some of you think I'm probably complaining because I'm not happy with what i have...but I don't have anything...and no I'm not rich. I drive around my mom's camry when she isn't using it, which is only after 5 on most days.

In my opinion it isn't worth it to spend near that much for a first car (i'm assuming your parents are buying the car, so i guess thats moot).

They're not bad, and rotary(wankel) engines are real nice, just hope nothing goes wrong.

under 20G is a large margin.

Get a BMW. you can get an E46 for under 20K, or you can get an E36 M3 for under 20.

Their fast, L6 motors, RWD, finding one with a 6 speed is easy, there luxory cars, chicks dig them, and they just say high class all over them. Their status factor is threw the roof, and everyone will be jealious

Just keep looking around and assessing your options.  It's a big purchase, whether or not it's your money; you don't want to end up with something you don't absolutely want.  I suggested a BMW 325i earlier, but you could definitely look into other entry-level exec. cars like a Mercedes C240 or even an X-Type Jaguar if you wanted class... although a hefty and regular repair bill would probably come with any British car...

Yea that is why Im kind of leaning away from classy european cars because of the hefty repair bills...but then again a rotary isn't cheap to fix. I will look into it :)

Yay someone else to back me up. :) Listen to us.

My first car was a 1991 BMW 318is, I got it for my 16th birthday. It was awesome. I loved that car, it wasn't exactly the most reliable, but it was great for a first. I treated the car like crap, and it doesn't matter, cause its your first, and cant expect it to last long. It was a $3,000 car, so it wasn't much of a loss. It was very fast, and was so much fun to drive. It had a 1.8L 4 banger, and a 5 speed trany. It was RWD, and weighed nothing. It had almost 200,000 miles on it, but it still was goin.

Drove it for 2 years, and 9 months ago I had to sell it. I now drive a 2002 Cavalier, and the quality on those things suck. I miss my bimmer. It was old, but the technology was still lightyears ahead of the cavalier.

I now have $28K in my bank account, and I've had enough of this cavalier, so I am buying a new car. Although since it is my money, I'm not spending any more then 10K. I'm looking for a E36 BMW, an IS coupe with a 5 speed. They are very good cars.

you can just try searching for one of those classic cars from the 60s or 70s and get it cheap, then just spend the rest of your money on fixing it up. Or, you could just get a Civic, cuz they;'re cheap, good gas, and reliable.

You're name entails that you watch Top Gear, take their advice on cars over ours. $20,000 is a lot to work with buddy, I mean you must really have some cash or know some people if you're first car's cap is at $20,000. ****, I had $5,000 to work with. I got a Honda Accord which is reliable and has good mileage. I can get from the San Francisco area to LA in under 2 tanks which I think is pretty good.

Well I plan on making a career out of racing...so an easy to drive car is really not the right decision for me
