I've always been really curious about this. Yesterday I opened a bottle of vodka, and for the first time in my life, tried it. I'm not too sure whether it was because I inhaled while swallowing and as a result some got into my windpipe/nose, or simply because I'm not used to such a strong drink, my entire throat felt like it was burning. Like there was an uncomfortably warm, somewhat prickly sensation in my throat. So I wanna know.. Does constant drinking of it make you 'immune' to that feeling (kinda how people who do rock climbing have very rough fingertips) or do you actually learn to LIKE that feeling?

You will always have the burn. I've been drinking bourbon for years and still get it the first sip or two.

So that burn is normal then? I mean like it feels like I've yelled too much, except that my voice doesn't change and become coarse.

I can't commit too much since I'm not a heavy drinker, but from my experience, you don't really get used to it. Also though, I know very few people who would drink vodka straight.

I lol'd You're suppose to feel that burn, that's what we like. It makes you feel warm and relaxed, obviously you have to get used to it too.

Yeah it's normal. It should go away quickly though.

Vodka straight? Eugh, Whisky/Scotch all the way if drinking straight. I generally do feel the burning after the first sip, maybe two, but after that its not burning but pleasant warm. The taste is usually aquired.

I can never enjoy the nail polishy taste of vodka, no matter how much I drink it. I still notice the strength of Whisky so I don't exactly chug it down but it doesn't really burn.

I'm not a 'seasoned' whatever drinker, but you don't wanna down vodka straight from the bottle if you don't enjoy that burn lol.

You want burn? Drink tequila on the rocks. It burns, but oh boy is it a good burn. I love some good top shelf tequila.

It's just a result of the alcohol actually burning you, like when you sterilize a cut. You may get used to it, but it will always be there.

Yeah that's what I was asking. A similarly styled question would be people who like beer.. Do they NOT taste the bitterness, or do they LIKE that bitter taste.

With beer the taste can grow on you. Me, for instance...I can drink beer and never taste the bitterness. But part of that depends on the beer you're drinking.

Ok, now you're in my realm. :P I drink beer generally every day and I don't taste any bitterness at all. At least not in lagers.

What brands do you like? When it comes to lager, I usually drink Sam Adams; there's a lot of great varieties of Sam Adams.

If only we were all so lucky. I'd rather drink vodka than beer... not good for someone my size either.

Some people say that a splash of water opens up the flavor of whiskey, but it is far from diluting or watering down the whiskey.

Bud's my beer for when it's not a special occasion, and I'm not getting smashed. If I'm getting smashed, I'll drink liquor and move on to cheap beer once I can't taste it anyways. When it's an occasion and I want a good beer, I'll have a Sam Adams.

Maybe I'll have to try it for myself, I guess. My friends will do roughly three parts whiskey for every one part water; to me that's diluting it.

Meh, I can't agree, it makes it weaker to me. I like my scotch and whiskeys to be strong.

i drink pretty heavily most weekends, so i consider myself a "season'd" drinker. the burn just comes with the territory. Although it is true that its possible to aquire a taste for certain drinks. For instance i didnt like beer much until about last year sometime.

I can vouch from my experience with others that watering down whiskey a little bit will help you prevent a hangover, because it keeps you hydrated while you're drinking.

Whiskey and water is a good drink, one of my standards when out and about, it's refreshing while still having a Whiskey flavor.

Well, just drink a glass of water afterwards. I wouldn't know for hard liquor, as it never gives me hangovers unless I drink far too much, and I mean WAY too much. Beer on the other hand, does give me a slight hangover if I drink it to the point of drunkenness

I'm actually more fond of Wild Turkey 101 than Jack Daniels, but I drink Jack Daniels more often, because it's cheaper. I also sometimes tend to enjoy Bacardi 151, although it's kind of hard to come by sometimes.

When I'm drinking liquor I keep a glass of liquor and a glass of water; I do a big drink of liquor and follow it with a little drink of water. It doesn't dilute the drink so it keeps it strong, but it still keeps me hydrated and washes out some of the aftertaste (especially when drinking not-so-good tequila).

I tend to compare the burn to spicy food. If you start off w/ really spicy food it's too much for most people. Over time you get us to it, and it becomes tolerable, but it never really goes away.

One thing that you get better at is figuring out subtle flavors like wood, fruit, sour, sweet, and all sorts of stuff. Sadly most American whiskey's are pretty bland due to the nature of their aging, but Irish whiskeys, and scotch are much more complicated, and flavorful.

Funny thing about vodka is that the burn is the taste, which basically makes vodka the worse alcohol there is as far as connoisseurs go. This is pretty ironic since vodka has one of the larger markets for top shelf drinks.

Well you see, we (I'm assuming we) enjoy our drinks, and not drink it to just get drunk. Yeah, I could shoot whiskey, but do I choose to? No, I'm not wasting good whiskey, I'm going to enjoy it. I think 151 is blegh.

With Whiskey, though I would not say I am seasoned, the first always has a kick. After that, it kind of goes down like water.

Well, just drink a glass of water afterwards. I wouldn't know for hard liquor, as it never gives me hangovers unless I drink far too much, and I mean WAY too much. Beer on the other hand, does give me a slight hangover if I drink it to the point of drunkenness

Well, thats what everyone should ideally do, but they obviously don't. I usually like to have a glass of a soft drink handy.

[QUOTE="JPOBS"]151 is tight. btw, on the rocks is for nubs. real men just take shots. carrot-cake

Well you see, we (I'm assuming we) enjoy our drinks, and not drink it to just get drunk. Yeah, I could shoot whiskey, but do I choose to? No, I'm not wasting good whiskey, I'm going to enjoy it. I think 151 is blegh.

If I'm drinking 151 proof I'm not drinking to enjoy it usually, haha. If 151 enters the room you know a **** of epic proportions is going to ensue, and you couldn't pay me to drink that stuff on the rocks. Mix, shot, or bust. I like to enjoy certain fin liqors but 151? That stuff was invented to get people wasted quickly.

I remember when i went on holiday to canery islands with my brother when i was about 16/17 and we went to same English pub each day to get our free shots :) and he had ran out of the stuff that was normally handed out and just grabbed this bottle from behind counter covered in dust and while pouring me a shot said "You'll soon regret wanting your free shot" We laughed it off just thinking it would be some cheap whiskey and had the shot and that was it,felt like liquid fire rushing down my throat,I turned to my brother and his face had turned bright red in about 2 seconds. When we tried talking we had the driest mouths like we been in the desert for a week.Still asked for another :) and man did he make nice pizzas yummy.Still in the 6 odd years since then i havent tried another whiskey that was so raw.

This is pretty ironic since vodka has one of the larger markets for top shelf drinks.

nah true vodka has no taste,I had russian vodka and thought it was water until i ended up on the floor with a spinning ceiling :) also did that with a fruit alcohol on holiday, just thought it was fruit juice and it was 50% and i drank alot.Walking back up the beach was fun :)

whats the point in drinking incrdeibly alcoholic drinks, upwards of 40%, if your dont plan on getting hammered? what is there to "enjoy" about a incredibly bad tasting drink, which you can only drink a bit of without gettign wasted anyway. why not drink a lesser alcoholic beverge and be able to consume and enjoy more of it? i just dont understand this

I'm not too sure. I guess it also depends on the content/make of the alcohol.

Vodka always feels like rubbing alcohol to me. It's just too bland.

Those types of drinks you either like or hate. Personally, I love vodka and whiskey, but I know many that don't like either.
