So why did The Conjuring receive so much praise?

I was extremely disappointed in the movie... After hearing so much about how scary it was and how inventive the atmospehre was, I really expected to be scared in the theater.

But the movie consisted completely of jump scares, the majority of which were very easy to predict.  Not only that, but the plot was about as cliche as they come.  There was no suspense (to me, at least) simply because the generic "family in danger from a posessed parent" plotline has been used ad nauseam.  Granted, I read the plot was kind of lciche, but I was hoping against hope that the atmosphere could have been something special.

Did I miss something?  I'm a huge horror fan, so I really wanted to love it, but I jsut couldn't.

So, why did it receive so much praise?

Sounds like your inner hipster is preventing you from liking it.

Just because a movie is critically acclaimed doesn't mean you are guaranteed to like it.

It's better than most scary movies out there, it seems you just expected to much out of it.

Please name some of your favourite scary movies for me. The conjuring was done very well with no predictable scares as far as i remember.

And what did I miss?

Well apparently you missed all the suspense, the actually good acting (which can be rare in horror movies), the great camera work, etc.

Everything about the plot and setting was story book horror. I found the scares to be well done. Some of the scares were some what unexpected and the use of the slow build up to those scares made it great. The lack of gore also made it stand out from some of the more recent horror films.

Why did Paranormal Activity receive so much praise? It did something that people reacted to. I haven't seen The Conjuring yet but I want to, and I'm assuming it's the same here. The casting, characters, plotline etc. don't always have to be spectacular so long as it hits audiences in a memorable way, especially for horror movies. There are a lot of admittedly BAD horror movies that I liked because of something memorable in them, and a lot of probably good ones that didn't sink in and scare me (I was expecting far more from The Shining for example, because EVERYONE seems to love that movie). It's all about whether you can stick with your audience long after the movie ends, I think.

The thing with The Shining is that it is the non-horror fans go to horror movie.

It really isn't scary in the least but it at least has a good story and great acting going for it.

Because it recalled the horror films of the 70s that had a gradual pace and had scares that felt smart. It falls apart in its third act a bit, but the first two acts are pretty damn great. Plus the camerawork is stellar.

Oh, and
it does all of this without a single death
. Pretty nifty.

It seemed like a throwback to classix 70s/80s horror flicks. I liked it, much better than I expected. The only thing that didn't make much sense to me was...
Why didn't they move out of the house when shit started to get real? Why did they stay there and fight it out before the deamon latched onto the mother?
I have seen this point brought up many times yet this is something DIRECTLY ADRESSED in the movie.

The Warrens flat out say that it is attached to the mother so if they move it will simply follow them there.

Before the Warrens even got involved the family also said all their money was tied up in that house so they had no funds to suddenly move because clocks keep stopping at 3AM....

I wouldn't call it a future horror classic but it was a very well done movie. Like others have been saying you went in with too high expectations.

I don't know.  It was just a completely average haunted house/person movie with a somewhat interesting 70's vibe to it which had nothing to do with the horror itself.  Every single scare was predictable and honestly none of them were even truly scary - they were all just jump scares.  I don't think it was a bad movie by any means, but I don't think it deserves the love it gets.  It was just sort of "meh."

The only part I thought was better than "meh" was the ending and that was because
Warren had never performed an exorcism before so he was fighting against this powerful demon without really being "allowed" to.
Also, the father in the movie is Ron Livingston and in my mind he will always be Peter Gibbons in Office Space, so that was kind of distracting in its own way.

The ending was easily the worst part of the movie and was a point where it really jumped the shark. How you can try and say the movie was average but praise the ending above all is absolutely beyond me. If anything was cliched, predictable, and average it was the ending....

It was not bad at all by any means but in my opinion it was forgettable.  I did not personally find it scary.  The last two scary movies that I enjoyed was Insidious (untill the last 20min) and Paranormal Activity 1.
