I've been dabbling (even though I'm an unwavering fan of Windows, lol sorry) with linux for a while, and I've found it to be a refreshing experience even though I haven't figured out exactly how to use the Repository (I'm suspecting it's because a-I'm running a liveUSB b-it's an x64 edition).

What distro do you use? I've tried Ubuntu and Linux Mint 6. Totally failed at getting LiveUSB Kubuntu to work using a "Unetbootin" app.

Any suggestions? BTW, I'm downloading Linux Mint 7 KDE CE right now.

I used to use Redhat and then later on Gentoo, but I haven't fooled with Linux in years. Why? Tarballs. I HATE Tarballs.

Ubuntu 9.04 running right now. And BTW, I RARELY EVER use a tarball. Everything is in the repository. Go to add/remove (yes you actually get to add programs in add/remove in linux) and check a box next to the app you want and hit apply. Simple as that.

Ummm...when I used Linux I didn't use an X-win environment. I just used the command line. Like I said, it's been years (nearly a decade) since I've fooled with Linux.

KDE was the only X-win I used but that was rare. This was all in a server environment, though.

They're like self-extracting .exe files without the self-extracting part.

Wouldn't that just be a folder then  ? Is it similar to .zip/.rar file is just without compression?

Most servers don't even have monitors hooked up to them, so a gui would be pretty pointless. Desktop linux is different though. Especially ubuntu/Fedora/SUSE/etc They're made to be user friendly

They're usually compressed when you download them, and they're a pain to install with, especially if you run into dependency hell *shudders*

Oh no, it's compressed. It's just you have to run command-line options to get at it.

If I remember correctly, for a file called Tarball.tar.bz2

#bunzip2 Tarball.tar.bz2

#tar -xvpf Tarball.tar

#cd Tarball

# ./configure

# make

# make install

Or something like that. It gets worse if you have dependencies.

 That doesn't look too good, I haven't touched the terminal since I started. Well hopefully I get my repository skills up. I tried installing VLC the other day, 15-20 minutes and a total no go. Again, I think it was because I running LiveUSB/x64.

I think you have to have it installed first, otherwise there's nowhere to write the data
