I am in an argument on another site and need links showing how solar flares can potentially kill us. Anybody got a good one? I remember once seeing someone here if a story about there being one that was 12 seconds away

I'm sure I've heard of a huge one that could knock out all out eletronics and stuff. Scientists can't predict when or if this will happen. As for killing us I have no idea. It'd have to be a huge one.
 it's all i can think about when i hear those words. DBZ for life lolBeat me to it...

this reminds me of the whole 2012 drama. maybe this is what the old guys predicted - a huge solar flare. only they over-estimated the impact. or whatever.
We are basically hit by them every week. we got hit by one that was apparently going to be "catastrophic" like 6 weeks ago. guess what? nothing happened. They can definitely effect earth greatly though. Aren't we supposed to get hit by one tomorrow?

. lol. your funny. 1: my grandpa was at a baseball game once when a solar flare happen, his skin got burned through his jeans, 2: you can get cancer, 3: They can destroy u.s electric grid . but sadly simple things that don't cost much can be added to are electric grid that can block this but they won't... no power = death to some people. it can wipe out are o zone.-_- They can't

They didn't calculate leap years so we should have been dead 7 months ago. :D I guess we all died and this is afterlife! Awesome! The Mayans were right.

So tomorrow is going to be the day where all of our electronics, such as computers, laptops, phones, iPods, etc, are going to die down by this solar flare? Or worst of all, can this "solar flare" kill us? Or is this like all the other solar flares where nothing happens?
I'm quite paranoid because I love my laptop, my phone, my TV & my Xbox 360.
dude we get hit by solar flares like 1000 times a year.So tomorrow is going to be the day where all of our electronics, such as computers, laptops, phones, iPods, etc, are going to die down by this solar flare? Or worst of all, can this "solar flare" kill us? Or is this like all the other solar flares where nothing happens?

I think our magnetic shield is going through a weaking phase right now.Nah, solar cant kill us, we have a bad ass magnetus sphere as a shield,
But if a nearby star of the considerable size should supernova, we are effed in the A

So we're screwed, eh? :( doubt it, it will still shield us properly. maybe lights will go out in high altitude places, I'd say thats about it.Nah, solar cant kill us, we have a bad ass magnetus sphere as a shield,

It hasn't exactly hit us yet I don't believe. nope, it hit us 8 hours ago.[QUOTE="lightleggy"]wow guess that flare utterly effed us huh?123Dan123
[QUOTE="k2theswiss"]2: you can get cancerCherokee_JackKind of like how you can get cancer from the Sun at any other time. and the least aggresive cancer, a cancer that literally lets you live like a normal person and with a normal life expectancy, all you have to do is wear more sunblock and try not to get much sun
From what I understand. Typical solar flares that happen on a regular basis pose no threat to the earth. But there are significant solar storms, events, or whatever you'd like to call them that could have devastating impact on satellites and electronics that function here on earth. Possibly disabling them and making modern methods of living impossible until the systems can come back online. Which would impact the economy, food distribution, and a number of other connected systems negatively. However, these type of events are not very common, and it's hard to say if, or when the earth could see something of a significant magnitude to posse a threat to human life on earth. But it is certainly possible. There are also other types of events that could have the same impact on the earth depending on their distance from the earth. A distant, but proximate supernova, for example. And a few others that I can't think of that deal with releasing massive amounts of energy in the direction of the earth.

That's not necessarily true. The leap days were added to our calendar to make our years LIKE the years indicated by the mayan calendar. That is 365 days each year. So in actuality, we are still pretty closely on track to the Mayan calendar.
