Today, My friend called me from his landline and said his Iphone broke, and to not call it. I said what happened and he said that it wouldnt turn on. He said he was going to take it to the verizon store to get it fixed.

I googled it for him just for the heck of it, and he found the solution on the first result.

Do you guys know any people who are too lazy to just google stuff? I mean isin't it just common sense? Whenever something weird happens with my phone or computer, i google it and ussualy find the solution

no the common person just doesnt think to google whenever they have a problem like that. Sometimes it makes more sense to go see a professional especially if the person isnt very familiar with technology

The multitude of ridiculous questions that flood OT when someone could have just as easily googled them comes to mind.

Same thing with my Dad. He's pretty technologically illiterate, and guess what? SO AM I LOL. So it annoys me when he asks me to fix something on his computer. And like you said, if something happens I usually google it, or try to solve it myself.

But with something as simple as an i phone not turing on.. I don't think you need a computer expert to tell you how to do a hard reset...

Sigh, what can we do? ....get everyone on internet forums to pitch in for a tv ad that promotes using google to solve simple problems?!

I'd ask google-able questions here because I feel I can trust the responses more and get some interaction with the answers (such as if something is unclear I don't have to google a second question).

common sense dictates that if you have a lack of familiarity with a product (in this case, an iPhone), you take it to people that have the know-how to fix it.

Some people prefer human interaction.

Also, common sense is everything you've learned by the age of 21.

How do you think people get familiar with stuff? They do research on google and fix the problem themselves! I've learned so much about computers and technology by googling my problems and how to do stuff.

Fix what? It's like having someone walk into an electronics store with their 42" TV telling them that it wont turn on, only to have the sales rep explain the remote requires batteries. The Iphone comes with a little booklet that tells you how to do a hard reset... Yet this guy was about to drive to the place he got the phone to complain it was broken...

I've learned a lot from people, too. Call me old-fashioned but I'd much prefer to pick someone's brain in a shop than to read some random forum post or help site on the web

Ditto, I love my local Mom and Pop computer/repair shop. This old man is a total intel/Nvidia/PC fanboy, but he knows his stuff and offers non-bias opinions if you encourage a tech conversation with him.

Uhh what? You'd prefer to drive 10-15 minutes to your phone retailer to ask how to turn it on, rather than ~2 minutes of google, or maybe a minute of reading the included manual?

Some people can't learn from a book, this is why we have teachers. I have the gift of "absorption" if you will, give me a weekend and a book on any topic and ill know everything I need to know about it.

There really are no "shops" around me, and if there were they'd probably charge money... Most information is available online now and I'm much more comfortable working on my stuff myself.

Some people just don't have the forethought to use Google before anything else. Google is still a relatively new thing. People in their late teens or early 20's may have grown up with technology, but not so much with Google. But hey, it benefits people like me who get money for fixing someone's computer. Some guy paid me $40 to defrag his hard drive yesterday because he didn't know how to do it. It would have taken a simple Google search and you would have found detailed instructions within 20 seconds.

Did you tell him how to defrag his hard drive for the future or did you just say "comeback if you ever need it done again" XD
