... shoot, and good luck.

Talk to anyone that thinks Freud knew what he was talking about. Nothing is unconscious. You cannot do something and hide it from yourself. If you deny something, that is not the same as being unconscious of it. When you sleep, your mind is still processing things, sometimes more so than when you're awake. That's how you retain information, but getting it from short term to long term memory during REM.
Are you breathing? Did you have to think about it to breath? No? Ok.GettingTired
This is not an unconscious act. Just becuase you do not have to think about it, does not mean you are unaware of it. You know that you breathe, right? The definition of unconcsious with "without awareness, sensastion, or cognition". Clearly you sense that you breathe, and are aware of it.

You sir are... wait, don't want to get modded.
I'm just going to throw this out here: I don't think bodily functions are controlled by thoughts... it's more like: thoughts are controlled by bodily functions.
Uh... I don't know where you've been, but Freud has basically been dismissed as a psychologist. His theories are all mainly inane, as well as sex-laden. Why he believed that young kids were in love with their mother/father and hated the other is beyond me.dreDREb13
Uh... I'm sorry, but Freud did not come up with the unconcious mind, Riegel did. There have been several psychologists and the like who have believed that there was such a thing as the unconcious mind.

Um, read what I said. I said talk to anyone who THINKS Freud is a genius. I don't. He's an idiot. And Riegel came up with is, but it was Freud who was the first one to say our thoughts and actions were controlled by UNCONSCIOUS sexual drives and such. Psychoanalysts believe there is an unconscious mind for the most part, and they are the main branch with no significant research to back them up. Which is why behaviorists, socioculturists and the like are more widely accepted. Trust me, there are plenty of people who still think Freud is the best thing that happened to this world. I will give him credit though for realizing that chidlren are different than adults, and that everyone is going to have sex and we need to get over it...well, Kinsey did that too I suppose.
Does your heart beat? Then that is technically considered your unconscious mind. There.

lolwut. you're obviously not qualified for this.

Yes, I'm sure you're a bright fellow too. Did I ever say they were controlled by thoughts? Breathing could be considered unconscious depending on what are you defining as unconsciousness? Do you consider instincts unconscious?Does your heart beat? Then that is technically considered your unconscious mind. There.

We've pretty much ruled out bodily functions as being unconsicous. Please actually look up the definition. If you have any awareness, sensation, or cognition of the process is isn't unconscious. You are aware of your heart beating, you know it beats, and you can feel it. No unconscious mind there, sorry.

Wrong. You're arguing semantics. That's not the definition of what an unconscious mind is. What GettingTired posted is wholly correct in the definition of "unconscious mind." You can be aware of it and notice it, but your mind will act without your compulsive action. From the definition of "unconscious mind:" These phenomena include unconscious feelings, unconscious or automatic skills, unnoticed perceptions, unconscious thoughts, unconscious habits and automatic reactions, complexes, hidden phobias and concealed desires.[QUOTE="wintermute0"]

Do you consider instincts unconscious? There is really only one true definiton of consciousness. And, depending on what your philosophy is on why we do what we do, and how we think, instincts can be nothing but cognitive processes in your brain being sorted so fast that it may seem like instinct, but was really careful consideration.

What? Are you making a conscious decision to tell your heart to beat constantly? No? Then there. You asked is there was an unconscious part of your mind and there is. Whether or not there is a little voice in your head is still up for debate. But there is a part of your brain making unconscious actions for you.[QUOTE="dreDREb13"] Thanks to his work, later psychologists expanded upon his theories and came up with some interesting new ideas. If this is all you wanted to say, then why didn't you say it to begin with? Nobody thinks Freud did anything truly groundbreaking other than have some weird ideas that didn't turn out to be true. Sure he laid the ground for future studies. By the definition of unconscious mind, I can definitely say that there might be factual psychological conclusions we can draw from the concept. I can think of a few experiments involving meeting random people. The disabled, a "good looking" person, an ugly person, etc. just to see how a person's brain may react upon interacting with them. If they said the same thing every time I'm sure there'd be some sort of difference in brain pattern, but neither of us are experts on the subject or psychology so there's no point in speculating.Well I can definitely say that if I see someone who I find attractive I'll act differently towards them without even realizing it. Freud would call that my "unconscious." I don't really believe in 95% of pscyhoanalysis, but there's definitely some minor truth to his theories, although most of them were wrong. It depends on if you believe there is an unconscious mind, which, I do not. Psychoanalysis is BS in my opinion, and concealed desires even more so. I do not hide anything from my brain. It knows everything. I have no hidden phobias, I know all of them.
