Scientists are hailing this prehistoric dinosaur as the “best-preserved dinosaur on Earth.” In fact, it is so well-preserved that it cannot be defined as a fossil. This magnificent ancient 18-foot-long specimen has been called a genuine “dinosaur mummy.”

The creature was first discovered in 2011 when an oil mine employee named Shawn Funk inadvertently discovered the specimen while at work.

Since then, it has taken researchers six years and around 7,000 hours to conduct tests on the evidence collected and prepare the remnants to be displayed at the museum.

Six. Years. That's how long this beast took to be collected and displayed at the museum. Over a ton in weight too, most impressive.

@Stevo_the_gamer: Saw it at the Tyrrell museum a few months ago. Was pretty cool. Lots of great stuff there and I go every few years. 20 yrs ago I gad a friend whose job was selling/trading dinosaur fossils and what not around the globe. Was a good fellow and an interesting occupation.

Actually no, but I definitely would. One of the things I'd like to do before I get too old to do it or die is to go south and try some of their crazy cuisine that they have there. A lot of it sounds delicious!

This is pretty damn cool. I mean we've seen CGI dinosaurs, fossils, bones reconstructed and propped up. But to look at this fossil/mummy and see it nearly exactly how it looked when it was alive is amazing. It's really crazy to think that the world used to be full of things like this.

That photographer must be the sh!tt!est I've ever seen. Not even ONCE did he take a picture that displays the fossil in it's entirety. Am I the only one who wants to see it's tail and how big the fossil is?

It certainly looks like the best (and only?) preserved dinosaur yet. But, I don't know if its discovery beats the impact of finding a live coelacanth back in 1938.

I've seen it in person. Tail is not intact. Highest definition is at the front with increasingly lower definition the farther back. Thing is still encased in rock and displayed at floor level making for hard angles to photograph. Also, all we are seeing is the armoured part of the top of its body, not the 90% soft tissue of its main body. Perhaps a taller than man alligator like look is a better description. Herbivore though.

Photos of the back would look mostly like rock and you would be disappointed in them.

@horgen: I'm from Florida, and you can get it just about anywhere down there. Usually breaded and fried.

Naw, Southern United States like Louisiana, New Orleans, etc. that have a much different style of cooking than the Northern United States.

Maybe, but even so I tend to like most deep fried things. I'm always opened to trying new food =) I've also learned over the years that if prepared right most things are at least decent, even things I normally dislike. Some chefs are very gifted in their creations.

Ditto -- many restaurants here in FL have'em. They're crispy.

I have, in New Orleans almost two years ago. Surprisingly close to chicken.

All you do is tempting me. Damn it.

Its not that interesting man, its not even like Chicken. It has a very bland, neutral taste no matter what. It simply absorbs all the flavors you cook it with. Its no different from tofu except if you cook it incorrectly it gets rubbery.

Want to try gator right now? Look down at your desk, imagine a chunk of it on a plate and then eat that imaginary piece. If you want it to taste better, sprinkle some spices on your fingers and then eat it.

Fried gator is ok, but then again if you fry most things they'll taste ok. On the topic of unhealthy fried foods, I recommend trying deep-fried oreos or twinkies :)

The grocery store near me started carrying gator steaks/hunks of meat in the frozen section. I would not want to try a grilled gator sandwich...I'll stick to frying it if I have to eat it.
