My spanish teacher mentioned this today. In Mexico, its just another day, but in America its an excuse to stock up on corona and tequila...she feels that it gets way too commercialized here and nobody really cares about what actually happened.

Nah I'm pretty sure Mexico celebrates with tradition such as women dancing in those big colorful dresses and of course the men getting drunk its not just the Americans!.

Border towns celebrate it because of the tourism and people get drunk and spend money in their towns so thats why. The rest of Mexico outside of puebla don't really celebrate it at all.

But yes here in america its just the "party" aspect of celebration and nothing like the festivities in Puebla.

You took the exact words out of my mouth.

P.S. "Cinco de Mayo" is a Senses Fail song. It doesn't have to do with the holiday, but it's a great song.

If there's one thing to learn from St. Patrick's Day, it's that Americans will take whatever chances to get drunk you throw at them. :P

I live in Arizona, we all know it doesn't really mean anything (Cause the real mexican independence day is september 16th), but people here still consider it as a day to celebrate, party and get drunk.

Cinco de Mayo.. That's a Mexican holiday, but they don't celebrate it Mexico. In the U.S. we celebrate it.. is that because almost every Mexican has snuck into America?
