If I make fun of someone's small height then thats not a big deal but if I make fun of one's skin color then that is a problem why? Both are natural traits where the individual had no control over. If you say that small height is inherently a negative trait then I can say the same thing about some particular skin color.

People who have small height have to face being made fun of throughout their lives, ofcourse its not something that happens all the time but it does happen. Do you suppose it doesnt hurt them? If we continue to discrimiante on physical traits then why is skin color one thing thats "protected"? I can make fun of someone's voice, nose, hair, height etc but not skin color.

It's more a matter of history than actually being a natural trait. Lots of black people were slaves and had other problems with white people in society in the past because of their skin color, so it's a more sensitive thing to talk about. Even if your intensions are racist. You never saw people being slaves for being short or having a weird voice.

Yeah, I mean if short people were enslaved in the past then that would probably be really offensive, but they weren't, so it's not. Skin color is also more directly tied to ethnicity. We can always identify someone'd general race by skin color, and then easily form stereotyped about them which could be offensive.

Yes this is nice in thoery but this is probably never going to happen. Humans are competitive and aggressive by nature and everyone wants to step on the other.

This is human nature. It's just who we are as a species and this will probably never change.

The world is never going to be a smurf-communistic utopia where everyone gets along and loves each other. I just don't think this is ever going to happen.

The word racist comes from RACE. So you can't be "racist" for height, I think the word you are looking for is discrimination.

That's a rather naive thing to say. Should a basketball coach let a dwarf into the team even though he can play well because of his height?

I beg to differ. Most racism, at least in my experience, is very casual and there's no true malice behind it. I'm sure in some parts of the world that's not true, but where I'm from it is, and I'd think it would be the same in the USA.

People have been lynched/burned at the stake for lots of crazy reasons throughout history. Once upon a time it was in-fashion to burn women and little girls (sometimes men/boys too) at the stake for witchcraft. It still done in some parts of the world.

Yes. Considering how popular racist slurs are and how comparatively low the rates of racist crime is I think it's a reasonable assumption to say most racist remarks are not made by people with real hatred of a particular race. Perhaps in your experience that's not true, but I sure have made racist insults in the past, and I'd be the first to admit that belief one race is inherently inferior to another has no scientific basis and is almost certainly false.

You have a good point. It's because of the history.. but still .. it's no excuse. Then again, people need to stop caring so much what people think. Unless it actually effects your job or something.. but in that case.. go get another one.

It's called acceptance and forgiveness. We don't live in the world that was 150-200 years ago,the average person doesn't keep slaves, nor has seen a slave. Very few people alive in North America have been a slave, or have endured the hardships of slavery. Just as we shouldn't assume every German is a Nazi spy, just because they're German. People shouldn't assume every white person is planning to enslave the blacks and make them into slaves. Racism will only die if both sides can accept that the majority of people don't believe such things, and everyone should have rights. If we keep reminding ourselves of past wrong-doings, and we keep holding grudges, there will never be forgiveness. As Morgan Freeman once said when asked how to stop racism, "We stop talking about it, You're a white man, and I'm a black man, but i'm just going to think of you as a man, and i hope you can do the same."

You're talking about media outlets. They basically dictate what is and isn't offensive. Whatever they decide doesn't necessarily make it legitimate.

There's a bit more to racism than making fun of someone's skin color, which in and of itself isn't the problem. When used as a trait separate "us" from "them", to deem others as inherently lesser, to dehumanize and and turn others into "animals", whom are then consequently treated as such, there lies a myriad of problems.

Making fun of someone's skin color is typically associated with racism, and not entirely without reason, even if it is just that.

This is why I find ultra patriotism funny, one has no control over where they are born, yet show pride (or shame) as if they themselves were responsible for for the ups and downs in their history and present.

see, I'd agree with that if there wasn't some racism today, as subtle as it may be sometimes. Nonetheless, people still operate on that wavelength. Doesn't really matter how long ago it was, people still think that way. Think about how long ago the inquisition was, the Catholic Church still catches flak for that, especially sometimes here in OT.

Doesn't everyone have their preference in regards to the people they want to associate with? Who would you rather be around... black people or white people? Some white people would certainly rather be around whites as some blacks would rather be around blacks. There may be exceptions, but everyone prefers a certain type of skin color when it comes to whatever kind of relationships. If you want to make jokes, make them... but like someone else said be prepared for the consequence. Finally and most importantly I prefer light skinned people. I don't hate black people or think they are idiots or inferior or anything negative by default, but I feel more comfortable around whites. There... see? The truth doesn't have to hurt.

See, I don't think racism has anything to do with making fun a person's skin color. Pointing out to a black person that his/her skin is as black as a leather jacket isn't really racist, unless that person is impossibly sensitive. Telling that person that he or she should be picking up cotton in Alabama and getting paid with fried chicken would be very, very racist.

[QUOTE="Dudersaper"]It's more a matter of history than actually being a natural trait. Lots of black people were slaves and had other problems with white people in society in the past because of their skin color, so it's a more sensitive thing to talk about. Even if your intensions are racist. You never saw people being slaves for being short or having a weird voice.Capitan_Kid

yep.  its stupid though that people today will still bring it up all the time and play that card.  You were not a slave and I was not your owner, lets all just leave it in the past ok?

You really think racism ended their? What about all the black people who lived in the 60s/50s and got treated like shit? Dont act like it happened forever ago because it didn't. That wasn't that long ago.

When did I say racism ended anywhere?  racism =/= slavery.  I am saying you will have younger black people who bring it up and judge younger white people, acting like we were all involved.  you want racism to go away?  stop propetuating the hate and prejudice.  Of course racism will NEVER go away.  Not completely.

I believe there are people who have lighter skin than other pakis, but I really doubt you'd count as light skinned compared to actual white people.

Because society sucks? I've heard people say they should be compensated because their ancestors suffered. Some people are simply idiots.

[QUOTE="supa_badman"][QUOTE="Nibroc420"][QUOTE="supa_badman"] More people take history more seriously. People's feelings get hurt and you should note that and try to keep racist comments to yourself, even if you think that the concept is ridiculous. That's called tact.

As Morgan Freeman once said when asked how to stop racism, "We stop talking about it, You're a white man, and I'm a black man, but i'm just going to think of you as a man, and i hope you can do the same."

see, I'd agree with that if there wasn't some racism today, as subtle as it may be sometimes. Nonetheless, people still operate on that wavelength. Doesn't really matter how long ago it was, people still think that way. Think about how long ago the inquisition was, the Catholic Church still catches flak for that, especially sometimes here in OT.

The racism in today's world is just nothing compared to what once was. One cannot solve racism by picking one race, and lifting it up on a pedestal in an attempt to make it "better" Races do not make people "better" or "worse", and someone's race is no reason to give them an advantage or disadvantage. However, far too many people cite racism as the reason they're not getting jobs, or they spin words and call people out for saying "racist" things. Racism has become less of a serious issue, and more of a buzz word, like "Bullying".

Well ofcourse I am not pale white like western people but you were talking about the "inherently negative" color part.

emily-vancamp-josh-bowman-revenge-cast-a

My skin color is alot like the guy on the left and it is my no means considered less attractive than the "real white" if anything its considered more attractive.

Btw there are many even lighter skinned people in pakistan than me especially women. We have people of all skin colors except dark chocolate black.
