Something I found very interesting.

It's a discussion we had in class. Ok people, this is what's going to happen. You'll read this scenario, post your reply, then come back and open up the spoiler tabs and read what's in there. Go back and post if your answer changed. DO NOT, I repeat,DO NOT open up the spoiler tag before posting your reply.

Scenario- You are at a train track switch. A passenger train is fast approaching. Flip the switch one way, and the train goes towards an unfinished bridge. All those poor passengers die. Flip the switch the other way, and it'll run over one person tied to the tracks. For the greater good, right?

Now, Go post your reply, come back, and open up the spoiler tag.

I would unfortunately have to sacrifice that person.

I'd probably flick the switch as even though I do not want to admit it, one sad family is better than a whole carriage of sad families.

i'd just let it go whatever way it was on when i got there. but i guess if i had to choose, then with the information given, i'd make it run over the person tied to the tracks.

If it went off the bridge I'm sure it'd look a bit cooler, with the explosion (if there was one) and all that. So yeah I'd go with that. Or maybe I'd just not touch it and see which way it was intended to go (I don't think it'd be set to go off an unfinished bridge anyway and who installs the lever before the track is finished?).

I've got a feeling that this is a trick question. But I would be the one person tied down. Whats one life against another twenty or more? But ya this is gonna be like oh, but that guy lived through the train being high enough to miss him or something. UGH!

Obviously I would choose to save the train as I rather like trains and don't want one falling into the water.

Edit - Ah well that person in my life suffered a massive stroke and her health is slowly failing and to top it off we had a bit of a falling out and I haven't talked to her in over 15 years so...not a huge deal in my life really I suppose. I was thinking there was going to be something more tricky involved.

Well the choice is pretty clear to me, let that single dude die for the greater good.

Is this only a two choice scenario? If it is, I'd probably kill the on guy; probably. In reality, I probably wouldn't even have the guts to switch anything.

I am sorry but I would have to run over the one person... 1 life is still horrible to loose but indeed it is for a greater good.

EDIT: my mother would not change my choice. Lots of mothers would die if I chose the selfish act.

Of course let the train full of passengers live instead of just one person. I have already predicted what the spoiler tag says, and no my answer is not the same. Blood is thicker than water. If I have to choose whether or not to let dozens of people unknown to me live and kill that one unknown person the answer is fairly obvious. If I know that person, then I would rather have dozens of people die than watch upon someone related to me die. Those people do not really mean anything to me, sorry if that is cold. Also depends on the situation, perhaps if I don't know that person that well I might decide the lives of all those other people are more valuable. Tough question, with no easy answer.

EDIT: Oh, my mother specifically? Then the answer is quite obvious... The woman who gave me life, nursed me when I was sick, raised me and supported me whenever she could vs dozens of unknown people... Yeah. Technically my answer has not changed, since I specifically said that if the person tied to the tracks was related to me and I knew them well then I would prefer their life to the lives of unknown people.

Let them all die and go get a taco or something.

I would switch it towards the one person, then jump on my horse and race down the tracks before the train can get to the person, cut their bonds and drag em out of the way at the vurry last second! Then I would help em onto my horse and lead them back to town and we would have a great conversation about how they ended up there. Then I would get ahold of the train conductor and be like "you need to learn how to use the BReAKS on a train.. "
