first some background story (skip if this bores you and just go down to the main question):

a childhood friend of mine for 10 years, which is now my roomie, and i entered one of our many heated debates, this time about the economical crisis. now, my friend is semi-interrested in politics, but i sorta usually have the upper hand since i research cases a bit more before i discuss em. even so, i value his points, and find it interresting to see things from a different angle.

but today he managed to utter "bush is the reason for the economical crisis cause he spent all americas money on the military and himself, and obama is now cleaning up bush' mess". after hearing that, i just started laughing (not the happy laughter, the kinda facepalm-laughing) and told him to start reading, something that (obviously) infuriated him

QUESTION: problem is, after this i dont feel i can take anything he says seriously anymore. this statement was so pathetic and unresearched. i mean, everytime he utters a statement, i just feel its in league with the previously mentioned comment. i feel our friendship have taken a severe blow, i even have problems listening to him talking about daily random stuff! anyone here experienced something like this, or got any hints what to do? hes a really good friend, and i would hate that something as petty as this would ruin our friendship.

I know how you feel. One of my relationships has suffered because of pure idiocy on the other persons behalf.

Well, Bush certainly didn't cause the current economical downturn, but he sure as hell didn't help matters. In regard to your friend, you need to come to terms with the fact that there will be things you will never see eye-to-eye on, and then move on.

You, good sir, just learned a life lesson my dad was fortunate enough to tell me:

"Do not talk religion or politics with those you care about unless you are sure you are of like minds."

Just dont do it, OK. Its such a stupid, stupid thing to risk friendship over lol.

Yeah, that and the fact that policys effect on the economy takes a while to show. Obama has not even been in office long enough to have a big impact positive or negetive. While he may in the long run make it worse( I have no clue) he did not put us in the boat to begin with. So not only is your friend not all wrong, but thats a dumb reason to lose a friend.

If you want to fix your relationship, then just stop having heated debates, unless that is what you two liked doing the most together...

If this person is really as good of a friend to you as you say, I wouldn't let your friendship go over a difference of opinion. So he's not as educated as you on politics. Big deal. :) If he's your friend, stuff like that shouldn't matter.

I had a friend who used to saw uneducated things a lot when we were in high school. Mostly about cars and technology. I basically corrected him so much, he didn't say anything to me, unless it was voicing opinion or if he was sure he was sure what he was saying was true.

When arguing politics people usually just get entrenched in their own beliefs.

Maybe you guys shouldn't argue about politics anymore, bond over some mario kart, it will heal those wounds.

I'm 28 and have had my best friend for 26 years, do the math. I met him when I was 2 as we lived 7 house down from me. I had a problem with him 3 years ago and didn't talk to him for 1.5 years. No matter how dumb the argument (ours was a big issue, not a silly statement) If you're really that good of friends you'll overcome it all own your own :)

Throwing money at the problem like Bush did and what the dems are doing now is reactionary. The recession wasn't caused by Bush's over spending.

Nice putting FACT after stating an opinion though:)

It had to do with his wife hating all his friends, so I stood up to him for them and mebecause she was really in the wrong (she gossiped about everyone of them)and he didn't like that. So I told him if he's throwing everyone else away he may as well do the same, then I walked out of his house. 1.5 years I woke up and realized he just can't be replaced so I went to his house andsomehow made up with him. Now he understands his wife dosen't like me, I don't like her but our friendship is fine now. So we get together once a week now to hang out and I just ignore her and everything is working fine.

[QUOTE="magicalclick"]Don't talk about economy and politics with your friend. That's screaming "I gonna own you", "you can kiss my bleep", and "president blah sux". In the end, what it is now is all combination of cause and effect. Blaming on one person is pointless for economy crisis. Many people may not realized it, one of the first problem originated from Clinton's lower requirement on house loans. It then keeps going down hill with all the bubblized house pricing and too many people borrowing money more than they should. And the debt transfer allows banks to transfer bad debt to other banks leading all the banks to lend money without caring if it is safe or not. However, Bush has his own mistakes too. Anyway, don't talk about sensitive debates with your friend.

oh, we do it all the time, its not the debate thats the problem, weve been doing this for over 10 years mind you :D its just that for the first time he was so far fetched and biased without any sort of facts, that it dealt a severe blow to my trust towards him.

[QUOTE="biBLioTek"]ok... gonna take this step by step for you... its not the argue thats the problem, we argue all the time. its the fact he didnt use facts, just made up some crap and spewed it out, then standing by it while i explained he was wrong. he ignored what i said and became angry at me. i say it again: its NOT the argue thats the problem, its that he doesnt check up facts and blindly believe whatever he wants to fit his own agenda.-Misanthropic-

Lots of people do that.So this means it IS about the argument you had. This really bothers you dosn't it? My advice? Just let it slide.. :|

nah, its a good advice, and prolly the main reason you piss me off a bit :D worst thing you can do to a man is prove him weak and wrong, eh?

Oh thats so wrong

Richard Gere also sprung to mind.

I went with hamsters to avoid the Gere connection, having just gotten off a 2 day suspension for alluding to something else that was considered offensive content ^_^
