Most of my friends can hardly listen to a song more than 5 minutes, yet i only get bored with songs that go longer than 10 minutes. Its probablybecause while they will say a song like Master of Puppets is waaaay too long, i think its pretty normal becuase im used to it.So what is your limit? Mine would be 10, however i have listened to longer ones but they tend to bore me.

I listen to plenty of classic rock/metal, so 7-9 minutes is the norm. I can listen for longer, though, as long as it's something good.

It depends if the beat or whatever is catchy or just annoying. Pretty much depends what song I guess.

Yes, I'd rather not be listening to Soulja Boy for 12 minutes, let alone 3.

It depends how much i like the song. If it's one of my current favourites, i'll listen to the entire thing. Otherwise, maybe a minute or two.

If its good, untill its done. Songs should go on as long as they need to in order to express whatever they set out to accomplish. If its 25 minutes and the composers put 25 minutes of diverse feeling into it, it doesnt matter to me. My favorite Jethro tull song is 40 + minutes :o

It really depends. Some of the ridiculously long songs are just over the top, and for the most part, is just people w-ngking on their instruments.

It's entirely dependent on the musical selection. Many of my favourite compositions are more than 30 minutes in duration. Some (like Mahler's symphonies) are more than an hour in duration. But if it's music I don't enjoy, I get fed up very quickly... within a minute or two. Why listen to music that bores me when I could be listening to something that doesn't?

I have quite a lot of songs that go over 10 minutes, and don't get boring, as they change a lot during that time. If it's very repetitive and not my sort of music, then naturally I would get bored quickly.

That depends on the musical material. I'd agree with you if you're referring to rock music because of the nature of composition in that genre. It doesn't develop themes. But if you're trying to develop several themes properly, you NEED more than 6 minutes to do it. Music is a lot like literature - if you have something compelling to say, you can say a lot and people won't stop reading. But if you have little to say and try to make it sound like you have a lot to say, the repetitive nature of the writing is apparent, and people find it uninteresting.

And then there's the issue of taste, too. If someone likes history, he can read a text book about it and not get bored. If someone hates history, he'll struggle to read even one page of the same text.

Well, yeah, I was pretty mjuch referring to modern rock and the like. As far as say, Classical music goes and stuff, I can usually stand it to be alot longer if its actually getting to a point, Often with rock songs though, its just the same thing over and over for half and hour. I honestly dont care much for uber super long 20 minuter guitar solos, theyre just boring...

It depends on the song, some are made short while other long. I have little love for the massive Rock songs that are really just several songs melted into a single track.

Yes, I feel exactly the same way. It's pretty obvious when composers try to write long works solely to be long and lack the compositional abilities to do so effectively... as if making it long will somehow lend it more credibility. Lengthy compositions only work well if the material DEMANDS a work be long to properly develop its themes. If it's just mind-numbing repetition of the same kind of writing for 20 minutes, there's no development, and it becomes, well, mind-numbingly boring.

Opeth is another great example, the vast majority of their long songs sound completely different at the end than the did at the beggining

Song length doesn't bother me as long as it's interesting. So far, I think the longest song I've listened to was "Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly, which is about 17 minutes long

I used to have some hour long, live trance tracks on my PC that I'd listen to while doing projects, having the continuous beat helped speed things up for me.

And the reason why a lot of people don't like songs more than 3 minutes is because the average pop song is about 3 minutes.

I don't like any songs that break 11 minutes, most of them fall within the 7-9 minute range.
