Sonia Sotomayor's Confirmation hearings in the Senate began yesterday, and everyone seems to agree that unless she loses her mind, she's going to get the position.

Do you think she'd make a fair addition to the Supreme Court? Or is this just another flop like the last administration's?

Never heard of her, but I don't think she'd make a good judge - she needs a more serious face and a hammer.

EDIT: On closer inspection, she looks scary.

Well, she says that owning a gun is not a fundamental right and that race should play a prominent role in deciding a court case. She's a lunatic and I'm a strict Conservative. Yeah... No, She should be turned away but the senate is too afraid to do that because it'll make Obama look bad.

she seems to vote slightly to the left. if my goal of erasing more of conservatism's remaining voice in gov can be helped by bringing her in, then I'm all for her.

Does anybody watch this show? I have to admit that I love it a lot. I love ghosts and ghost stories so it's right up my alley. In case you were wondering, it's on at a new time 9PM! Watch this Wednesday at 9PM on Cartoon Network and join the team on their investigation through Fort MacArthur!! Does anybody else watch this show? Speaking of ghosts, anybody heard about the new Ghostbusters movie? I heard the same cast is signed on for it!bakedliam

I think she'll do reasonably well, but I don't think she'll give us many surprises. There's really a limited number of Supreme Court justice types: 1. Trojan Horse nominees (Intentional) These are folks who portray themselves one way in order to get confirmed, and then end up being completely different once they get to the bench. John Roberts comes to mind. Claimed he was an impartial umpire, just interested in calling balls and strikes. His record since taking the bench has him as ridiculously conservative.

2. Trojan Horse nominees (Unintentional) The folks who get nominated that end up surprising EVERYONE, including the administration that nominated them. These are the real court changing nominees who radically swing things in unexpected directions. Justice Souter, whom Sotomayor would be replacing, was one of these. Surprised the heck out of conservatives by ending up being a reliable liberal for the most part. 3. Business as Usual picks The people that are being nominated to replace a fairly reliably liberal or conservative justice without really shaking things up. Most people know that Sotomayor is going to a pretty liberal justice, but not outrageously so. But she's replacing a justice just like that, which is why nobody really seems to care about what's going on with the proceedings. She's not going to shake up the balance of the court/status quo in any meaningful way.

I haven't really studied any of her rulings or political views so I don't really have an opinion on her. I know she is liberal (and I wouldn't have expected Obama to appoint a conservative anyway), but I hope she is unbiased enough to not let that influence her rulings.

I agree that Sotomayor will most likely be a 3. I don't find her surprising anyone.

YES!:D

Sotomayor is immensly qualified to be on the SCOTUS:

  • Highly intelligent
  • Plenty of experience
  • Knows the law

Conservatives have nothing to gain by opposing her, unless they just want to anger the latino community even further. :)

She seems competent; its fun listening to the hearings wondering when some jackass in the gallery is going to start screaming about their favorite cause ("METH ADDICTION TREATMENT FOR HOUSE CENTIPEDES!" or whatever) and bring things to a brief halt.

Not saying race has anything to do with it but it'd be nice to have a mixed background on the highest court of law.

Im sure those 200 years of oppression done by the supreme court against anyone who wasn't white or male, had nothing to do with every justice being white and or male

I don't get what you're saying. I'm just saying the highest court of law should be a mixed race court which is indicative of America There are many great justices but come on, it'd be far better to have a mixed court...

actually I'm sure it can in some cases...as much as gender can give a justice a different point of view on laws. Sandra Day O'Connor comes to mind.

No, no, it was sympomatic. The Supreme Court's racial composition as all white (and all male) did not cause that inequality, but rather suggested it. Don't forget it was an all white male court that passed Brown v. Board of Ed.

I don't like her propensity for "bench activism." The Supreme Court only interprets the Constitution; it DOES NOT make laws.

Other than that, though, she seems competent enough.

I don't want to troll or anything but i wonder if she was white what would be the reactions of people. Even though i am latino i strongly suggest the government appoints a latino justice we are becoming the major minority and we only seem to get bigger over the past years we need someone that can handle or pass immigration laws. She has tons of experience and has proven her self through many obstacles and also brings diversity to the table which will better represent the United States as a diverse and equal country

I only know what I read in the opinions section of the newspaper, and those people really don't like her. But, then again, I often disagree with that opinion section. New York Daily News if anyone's wondering.

Her life story gives me a boost and makes me proud I was born in NYC. She grew up in the PROJECTS! The place where gang activity is active, drugs roam the place, and people hardly make it to 21. She managed to get out with her head straight and look at wheres shes at! Even if she doesnt get confirmed, this gives me a boost, and all those kids who are living in the the South Bronx PJs or anyother PJs.
