Set a tape recorder up, and I bet you'll hear the tree fall.FragStains
Its prity cool how its almost like sound only exists when thers som1 to hear it, like if
a tree falls in the woods and thers no1 ther to hear it, does it make a sound?
GarchomPro
Just figuring it out eh?
It makes a sound because the waves are still there. SpootyHead
If a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it, it doesn't make a sound, it makes waves that fade out over time and distance if nothing is there to pick up the waves they stay just that until they fade out meaning no sound is actually created.

That was the stupidest thing I've read in a while.
Of course sound exists if nobody is around to hear it. Sound waves.... How has that not occurred to you?

Kinda.
For all intents and purposes it would not exist as it would just be lightwaves traveling through nothingness.
And thats not by my logic, thats just by logic, If everyone and thing on the world was deaf technically sound would not exist, as it would just be waves in the air.
P.S As flattering as it is, i'm not Jesus Christ.
Ok now.
There's two definitions of sound.
1. The actual distortion of a median that can be interpreted by a receiver.
2. The way the distortion of a median relates to the receiver.
It just depends on which definition you think is more accurate. So can we end this stupid discussion?
Ussing your logic...

So for all intents in purposes it doesn't exist. From our perspective anyway. Maybe theres some alien planet who have that very light as a sun. But the essense of the "Tree Falling" question is perspective and from perspectice thing can potentially not exist for you.
Right this second for example, i have music playing quitely and the hum of the computer, now i can't hear the computer over the music so right now there really isn't a hum to hear. Same thing applys for distance. I'm sure that somewhere in the city someone is playing music or watching TV whith the sound at a deaf causing level, but to me it doesn't even exist because i am not there to hear it.
Its all about perspective and experience.

But it still exists, what's your point? That's like saying we're the only life in the universe because we're the only life we know to exist.

It doesn't exist to you, thats the point. Even if it exists to someone else you can only trust your perspective and expereince of the situation. Lets alter the question slightly "If a Tree falls in the woods and only your friend is there to hear it, does the sound exist for you?" Answer: No. it exists for your friend,he can show you the tree, describe the noise but to you it didn't make a noise as you weren't there to experience it. This is just the same as the "Does an empty room exist" question and it has essentially the same method to get the answer and that method is; Perspective.
And its not really like saying no alien life forms exist. In our experiences they haven't but to quote Hume "You can't predict the future based on past experiences" Currently we don't know of alien life and thats pretty much a fact, obviously there will be some "Oh but i saw a UFO" and some "Its insane to thing we are alone in the universe" but in the end the answer is we just don't know. Why don't we know because we haven't viewed (or expierenced) the entire universe and don't know what exists out there.
According to this line of logic, Color doesn't exist unless someone is looking at an object. Apparently, the second someone stops looking at something, it goes grayscale. Guess we're living in Steamboat Willie land.ElZilcho90
Light and sound are not comparable. Light exists whether someone sees it or not. Soundwaves exist whether someone hears it or not. Sound does not exist if no one hears it.

I get what you're saying if we clarify the terminology: you're stating light doesn't exist unless it is being recieved and processed, I.E. by someone's eyes, while light waves always exist whether they're received or not. Same goes for Sound and sound waves. Right?
Sound does not exist if no one hears it.

No. Light and soundwaves both exist on their own. Sound itself needs a listener.
Let's check out what Merriam Webster says...
Main Entry: 3sound
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English soun, from Anglo-French son, sun, from Latin sonus, from sonare to sound; akin to Old English swinn melody, Sanskrit svanati it sounds
1 a: a particular auditory impression : TONEb: the sensation perceived by the sense of hearing c: mechanical radiant energy that is transmitted by longitudinal pressure waves in a material medium (as air) and is the objective cause of hearing
So, both answers are correct.

Denying the reality of something you don't perceive may be a fun philosophical trick, but that's all it is :( Having lived through postmodernism, I am not eager to put perspective and relativism on such a high pedestal.~-~So you're talking about the translation our mind makes from waves to sight/ hearing? Well then DUH! If I didn't eat a thing ice cream then I never tasted it. If your computer wasn't hooked up to a monitor then the electric pattern we identify as 1011001... etc. would never be translated into this dancing Pikachu...~-~Kinda.
