I dont get why people in the south (not all of them, but many nonetheless)are so supportive of a doctrine of defiance, opression, and racism.

I mean, waving that confederate flag & all means your supporting a past of slavery (no need to explain why thats bad), defiance of legal elections (south lost presidency to abraham lincoln, even after not putting his name on their ballots, and then seceding after they didnt get who they wanted to win), deep rooted racism, love for a short-lived countrythat was both politically and militarily (is that a word?)a failure, and a whole bunch of other stuff that makes many americans see the south as a bunch of general "rednecks"

i mean, why do it? is there really something from that you can draw pride from? (that the rest of society would understand)

i mean, i dont hate southern people (love'em in fact) but thats tupid confederate flag, white priveledge stuff really gets me wondering how we still let those kinds of people exist >_>

To people in the south the Confederacy represents much more than racism. It's more of a state rights thing. Lincoln wasn't exactly a saint when it came to liberty and justice for all, either. To southerners the Confederacy represents the idea of the USA as a looser collection of states rather than a strong dominant federal government.

I would say a very small fraction support, as you say "defiance, oppression, and racism". Not any larger percentage than any other part of the country. Why single out a specific group?

Dude, I wish I was from the south. Georgia peaches, BBQ.... sweet home alabama. Just amazing. And the confederate flag is all over the place in the south: on license plates, it was even used on a military patch in the 70s and onward. Its not always associated with racism and slavery

I've been wondering that for a while, too. I don't know if I've found the answer, but I think it depends on each person's ego.

Trust me, I get it less than you, and I'm white. I live in Washington State and the rednecks all over my town in HS had that Confederate flag crap. They had the muddy truck, the Carhardt jeans that were never washed, and the wad of chew all complimenting their Confederate Flag Belt buckle. I asked one of them one time "You don't live in the south, why do you wear that crap?" He said, it's an ideal, a way of life. I said "What? of stupidity? Of lacking tolerance? Of hate?" He had no answer, obviously...

I live in the South, but not really. Miami isn't really considered the South...

Anyway, I agree about the flags and stuff, but I do love "southern" things. I love me some "ya'lls" and Paula Deen, honey.

Not all progress is good :P

I'd say most of the progress in economic theory since the 20s wasn't.

I'm from Missouri, so we're kinda in the middle. I don't understand supporting the flag, but I can understand being proud of southern heritage, just not confederate heritage.

The sad thing about this board is that for every 2 smart posters' there's 200 dense ones.

The North waved the American flag for close to 100 years, while taking part in slavery. This goes for the KKK, too.

The only reason Lincoln freed southern slaves was to win the war, while northern slaves kept a pickin' (the Emancipation Proclomation wasn't even ratified until Lincoln's death).

People's views of the South are greatly skewed.

I bet you think we all walk around in potato sacks and chew tabacco, too.

i dont need sympathy

but i do bet you need a hug :D

but seriously, the thing that baffles me is that these southern pride advocates pride themselves that have no real merit in society(which amazes me because they find a way to make something positive out of it for themselves)

and really, its not just about racism, or backward policies or politics, its just general attitude, it really is contradictory and confusing

and if anyone was wondering, i live near san fransisco (don't play up the homosexual or snobbyness steryotype, it aint all tv makes it out to be), but its just so different from when i visited/lived in the south (lived in maryland, visited south 20+ times approxamately)

I'm not even from the U.S.A and I know thats a pretty ignorant statement to make.I've been to various southern states, and I've encountered zero racists in my time there.Have you taken into account that the Confederate flag might represent something other than racism, slavery oppression etc... In fact it might not even represent those things anymore.I would wager that the majority of southerners aren't racists, but are just southerners.Who come from the south and are proud of it.

On a trivial note, the Irish GAA team of county Cork are nicknamed "The Rebels" and the fans can be seen carrying Confederate flags often >_>

That doesn't really have to do with the Confederacy, but more to do with aggressive action that spawned from the frustration of having lost prospects for independence on top of losing a bloody war. You ought to read up on how the civil rights movement was received in a lot of northern cities, though.

[QUOTE="Bruin4ev3r1520"]I actually want to visit some states in the south some day. The only problem with that is it means I'd have to leave So Cal. And leaving So Cal means leaving In N Out. Leaving In N Out is not something I am capable of.uberbra

DUDE ME TOO! *high fives*

i cant go every couple of weeks without a double-double

and i only say every couple of weeks because i gots to stay lean (and crush the fat american steryotype)

I used to eat it literally every other day when my addiction to it was at the worst level haha I only weigh 160 lbs though :P Double double with grilled onions and Dr Pepper. Mmmm :D I still eat it once a week though except now its a cheeseburger with grilled onions and animal style fries. I dont drink soda anymore though.

I live in the South, but not really. Miami isn't really considered the South...

Anyway, I agree about the flags and stuff, but I do love "southern" things. I love me some "ya'lls" and Paula Deen, honey.
