I've been watching that new Discovery Channel show about becoming a Green Beret, and it's amazing what these guys go through to become one.

First of all, I was surprised that a lot of these soldiers aren't big, huge, buff dudes like Jesse Ventura (who was an ex-Seal) but they were just average looking guys.

Most of the tests were not just about their pyshical endurance, but it was more about their mental strength and intelligence. I guess the training was designed to break them and to see who can endure it or find a way to stay strong until the end.

Seeing Bear Grylls, who is a Colonel for the S.A.S., and the new show Man Woman Wild with Myke Hawke, who's a Captain for the Special Forces, Grylls and Hawke don't look like the super human Gears of War type of beasts we all think that make up Special Forces teams like in the movies and video games we play. But they're just average looking guys with average builds. But they're super intelligent, highly skilled, and mentally tough.

I think that's what makes them stand out above normal soldiers. They have to excel at everything. But I think Bear Grylls is an exception. He's a real-life super man!

As I recall when watching a show on the Green Berets they noted the part of their training that separates them from all others is not endurance and such. Its that they train them to fully use their mind and think independently/ on there own (well in their squad).

Which makes since as they are dropped behind enemy lines for long periods of time, not just a tactical assault (like the SAS or Navy Seals)

Yeah, no matter how strong and fit you are, you need the right mind.

You dont need to be jacked to be in the army, just be able to run, and do some pushups and situps is pretty much it. Alls it is is stamina which is what is needed in the war zones.

It's amazing what they go through. I would love to try their training to see how far I can go.

It's just training, like every other kind of professional. Engineers, doctors and such, they also spend many years training and grasping many complex concepts. You can do anything if you put your mind to it.
