Just saw this clip on NBC about new changes passed for the state of Virginia. Fortunately, it only applies to in state drivers, but it's horrendous. Speed in the state and be subject to up to 5500$ in fines.

Now, I certainly don't break the law, but still that's just plain harassment. People are going to have to take out loans just to pay their tickets.

I thought it was a joke at first, but NBC showed the numbers. It only applies to instate drivers. But it consists of 3500 court fees then civil fees, etc. I think a 200$ ticket is excessive, but 5500$? That's just insane. No way this gets passed - the people would revolt.

I'm sure it would get people to stop speeding. Or just increase the population of homeless people.

its more than just Virginia. i believe they have the harshest penalty, but its a growing trend among states. I read about this on msn i believe. They're calling it "driver responsibility" and basically you end up paying money every year for a few years after you get one of these tickets. ridiculous.

you know what the effect of that is- more high speed chases - think about it - it'll be cheaper to just pay for bail for evading arrest than that BS

That's great! I wish they would have fines that high everywhere. Too many people are killed by people who speed or who just do stupid things while they're driving.

more people would die from the high speed chases that would ensue when a policeman tries to pull the speeding driver over

If it keeps people from speeding then all the better. There is no point in exceeding the posted speed limit... so why do it?

Maybe it will teach people not to speed.

Its a bit much. but there is the simple way to avoid it.

That is a possible side effect. They expect to make driving safer because people would be less likely to speed, but when they do get caught they would risk more to get away.

DANG. in missouri, its only like a $100 fine, depending on how fast you go. and oddly enough, only $10,000 for hitting a worker in a work zone, and 4 years in prison.
