Didn't care for it much. Easily the worst of the three, and a big letdown after the phenomenal Spider-Man 2. Not to say that it was horrible, but it was very disappointing.

I thought it was pretty good.  Also, the theater was surprisingly empty for a midday showing (5 other people)

Just go see it once, just to see Venom. Though they managed to ruin even Venom.

Spidey 1> Spidey 3> Spidey 2

I liked it a lot. Fighting was cool but I really liked Peter Parker himself and hell I even thought Harry was enjoyable (I always hated him).

I could list several reasons for why I didn't like it, but I'll only list one:  emo Peter Parker

It just so happens that my blog post for the day was on this ****fest of a movie. This review will have SPOILERS. Lots of them. But then again, do you really go to watch a movie like Spiderman 3 expecting huge “I did NOT see that coming!” style plot twists? The Good: The visual effects are excellent. In particular, Venom and the Sandman effects are top notch. Um.......yeah that about covers it. The Bad: Where to begin? Multiple storylines that get resolved jarringly. Unsympathetic characters for the most part. Way too much crying. Yet again, Spidey can't keep his damned mask on. Cliché after cliché. Painful transitions between comedy and tragedy. Several characters are very badly cast. Fans of the first two movies (of which I was one) shall long consider Spiderman 3 to have followed in the footsteps of such stingbomb sequels as Matrix 3 and Godfather 3. There is bad, and then there is the butchery that takes place here. With so much crap to dissect, it is a little difficult to choose where to start. The movie picks up with Tobey/Spidey narrating the entrance like he has with the previous two movies. As you might expect, things are actually going quite well for Peter Parker at the moment. With no super villians in sight, our hero is having no problems cleaning up New York of all crime and scum. The city loves him. Mary Jane loves him. His professor loves him. His aunt May loves him. His coworkers like him. Heck, if he had an apartment big enough to keep a pet dog in, Rover would probably love him. Of course it would be a pretty boring movie if everything stayed that way. See, all this loving has gone to Peter's head. He's turning into a real self-centered jerk. No problems so far. In fact, I like this opening. Peter has been an unloved, unpopular nerd his entire life and now he's the toast of the town and has a smoking hot girlfriend that he's about to ask to marry him. Why shouldn't he be feeling a bit extra macho with that going for him? Going from a zero to a hero has to be intoxicating stuff. While it is pretty predictable that this sort of behavior is going to eventually land him in trouble, at least it is realistic human behavior so far. It is about this time, which I suppose would be right around 20 minutes after the opening credits end, that both Spidey's life and the movie start falling apart on us. The film introduces a nice blond lady named Gwen Stacy. For those of you who have been a comic book reader for a LONG time, you may remember her as Peter’s girlfriend prior to Mary Jane. In the comics, she suffers a horribly tragic demise at the hands of the Green Goblin. In this movie she is apparently both smart enough to be in Peter’s presumably super advanced science classes (after all, Peter WAS supposedly some sort of genius in the first two movies, he likely isn’t taking the introduction level classes), but is stupid enough that he needs Peter to help her out. She’s also a model and the daughter of the police chief. By the most staggering of coincidences, she’s also the girlfriend of Spiderman’s new rival at The Daily Bugle, Topher “I cannot believe I’m playing the role of Venom after being Eric Foreman for my entire acting career” Grace. We meet Gwen as Spiderman is saving her from a building that gets hit by a malfunctioning crane. She’s posing in front of what looks like some office equipment. Is that a Canon color copier? Since when did supermodels help sell office equipment? You can’t make this stuff up. Or at least you shouldn’t be allowed to make this stuff up. There should be a law against it. As you might guess, Spiderman saves the day and drops Gwen off. It’s about this time that what remains of rationality and continuity gets dropped off the movie as well. For the remaining time left in the movie, a soul slaying two hours, you’re treated to what can best be described as a jarring mix of what feels like several different movies all thrown into one and a train wreck of staggering coincidence after staggering coincidence. (Yes, it makes perfect sense that a meteor carrying an alien creature that first brings out Peter’s dark side and later brings out Topher Grace’s dark side when he becomes venom would just happen to land, literally, about twenty feet away from where Peter and Mary Jane are necking in the park.) It almost seems like the director had bipolar disorder while he was making the movie. He skips back and forth from the movie being a tragedy/drama and a comedy. One moment he is showing the slow devolution of Spiderman into full-fledged a-hole status, and then the next he inserts an extremely awkward scene of Peter Parker sashaying (there really is no other word to describe it) down the street doing his best John Travolta impersonation and stopping to pick up some new goth clothes. One moment he shows Mary Jane pining away in sadness due to the rift that has developed between her and Peter and the totally warranted collapse of her Broadway career, and then the next moment she’s over at Harry Osborne’s apartment while the two of them do an equally awkward jitterbug style dance together while they make an omelet together. I have a theory of what happened. The director made two different versions of this movie, a serious one showing the dangers of hatred/vengeance where everyone, and I do mean everyone, cries constantly and all the characters are unlikable jerks that the audience can feel no sympathy for at all, and a comic one where he intended to make this movie a mocking parody of the first one. He couldn’t decide which version of the movie to use, so Topher Grace said that they should do a “circle” like how the characters in “That 70’s Show” did and get stoned together. Then, when they were good and baked, the answer would be obvious. So all the cast members got stoned together and the director decided that the obvious answer if he couldn’t pick between the two movie versions was to throw them both into the final version together like a cook throws spaghetti at a wall to see if it was done or not. So the director threw both the cheesy comedy version and the tragic drama version at the wall together, heedless of the irony. The irony is that either version by itself would have been pretty darn good. It is hard to spend nearly $250 million dollars making a movie and have it be completely bad. The scenes themselves are pretty good. All of them are, for the most part, well acted if you can accept the fact that you’re watching two movies at once. Either version would have, by itself, been worth a solid B- as a movie. Having them both in together easily dropped this highly anticipated film into the D range.
