Do you think it's real? Do people suddenly burst into flames? :?

Is there a rational explanation for the dozens of cases where people caught on fire for no apparent reason?

So OT do you think it's real or is a hoax/other explanation?

I don't know if it's real and honestly I don't care. Just as long as it accompanies the explosion of the Empire State Building in a plotless Hollywood blockbuster, I'm fine.

Nope. I think the idea that humans can just randomly burst into flames is crazy. I'm sure there is a logical reason for each of these cases where people caught on fire for no reason.

The human body can't reach temperatures that high on its own.

Just because someone "caught on fire for no apparent reason" doesn't mean there isn't a reason, just that it isn't apparent. And from the shows I've seen on TV, it's very apparent to the professionals who deal with fires, it's just not apparent to the sensationalist film makers who want to make a buck off someone else's misfortune.

Not sure. I've heard people try to explain how it happened scientifically and it didn't really seem to make sense to me.

From the Article

:

A man who burned to death in his home died as a result of spontaneous combustion, an Irish coroner has ruled.

It is believed to be the first case of its kind in Ireland.

West Galway coroner Dr Ciaran McLoughlin said it was the first time in 25 years of investigating deaths that he had returned such a verdict.

TheHighWind

it's real but it's not supernatural or anything all the research i have seen on it says the people likley to combust are overweight, alcoholic or heavily medicated and smoke.

so you have someone in a stupor that drops a lit cig on themselves they catch fire and then the fat burns extremely fast and extremely hot and when the fuel runs out the fire goes out.

if you want to see how hot fats burn hold a lighter to an M&M candy for a min or so and watch that sucker ignite and go so hot it turns blue.

Too many cases reported for it to be untrue, there will be a natural explanation however. We just havn't discovered it yet.

I can't believe I agree with you on something. :|

I just kinda/sorta think that there are a whole mess of chemicals in the human body, along with all kinds of electrical pulses. So, if someone has an elevated levels of 'chemical X' in their system, sure, maybe they can ignite from the inside. There is oxygen in the body, after all.

I agree with this, the strange part however if that the rest of the building doesn't catch fire, not just that the person does.

Kinda reminds me of the old Bud Light commercials.

It's happened many times. Burned up body and scorch marks on the ground around it, but nothing else was damaged.

Get burned outside the body wont damage the inside vital organs. It's almost impossible with the environment inside our body and the homeostasis; the body could go into combustion with no reason. Unless you get higher amount of alcohol in your blood and combine it with the electrical charges in our nervous system…. Nah, its has to be a highs amount of alcohol %..... I don't know

Aren't there enough cases for it to be a proven cause of death?
