I constantly hear St. Anger being called the worst Metallica album. I'd like to know why those people hate it. Frantic, St. Anger and Some Kind of Monster are all great tracks. The rest of the album is kind of sub-par, especially by Metallica's standards and it is amongst one of my least favourite Metallica albums (probably second least behind Load). That being said, I do think it is a solid album overall and I'd give it 6.5 out of 10. Frantic is probably in my Top 20 Metallica tracks.

If you vote the first option, do you think Death Magnetic is better or worse, and do you think Metallica can go back to basics for their upcoming album?

Generic music in general compared to their past work. James awful childhood like lyrics and screams. The drums... etc.

Metallica died a long time ago. The 80s were their prime, the 90s gave them haircuts and a tailoring to the masses, and honestly that whole debacle about St. Anger is long dead. Uniformly, everyone pretty much agrees (I would suspect even Metallica) that the album carries nowhere near the weight and quality of their past albums. On interviews they defend it, but mostly out of stubborness. I used to listen to them a lot before I got into more Euro Viking/Folk/Epic metal, then I pretty much forgot Metallica entirely. Now I don't even really listen to any metal anymore, as I've pretty much exhausted the only good bands (Ensiferum, Tyr, Finntoll, Blind Guardian, etc).

but if you enjoy St. Anger, heck, enjoy it. Really doesn't matter anymore as I (along with many others) hold just about zero hope that Metallica will ever again make a comeback... especially not with a current musical culture so sickenly saturated with reality tv pop stars, desperate young slutty girl pop, dubstep (??) and gloating pansy rap and hip-hop performers... all being sold primarily to 8 year olds.

i think it's stupid to expect a band to repeat their successful past over and over again, metallica needed to put those days behind and st. anger was their getgo.the album was never supposed to be one of their bests.

Just plain, bad music. Worse than generic due to weaker songwriting and some of the worst production ever. Also Drop C is NOT "heavy." Dropped tuning is NEVER heavy.

Nobody considers it a metal album either. Honestly I'd only consider Kill 'Em All metal out of all of Metallica's albums (the first four generally being considered metal, sometimes the first three only). The others lack the aggression of thrash and instead sound more along the lines of revisionist heavy metal or hard rock to me.

You are right that the hits on the album are ok songs, but they are way to long and the snaredrum sounds terrible imo. Problem with st.Anger is that Metallica went from being innovative to replicate the sounds of various nu metalbands that came after them throughout the nineties. If I recall correctly most of the songs are seven to eight minutes long with no change just the same stuff over and over again with no solos or variation, funny when Lars Ullrich stated that on Justice the songs was way to long and that is something they will never do again. Difference is that Justice was a great and variated album st.Anger is just drop D havoc. Metallica never quite became the same after that album, I was a die hard fan back in the days now I listen to other bands that has more to offer for my ears.

I have no hate for it, did not expect anything else than an album deserving the price I paid for it... and I thought it sucked, so I was a bit pissed. I'm always pissed when i waste 15$ on a **** album, nothing against Metallica.

Just like most bands and artists, money went to their fu*king head.Money went to Metallica's head when the black album came out. There just not the same anymore. There are bands and artists like Ozzy Osbourne,AC/DC etc...that have stuck to their roots and have never changed, for that,I have total respect for them.Unlike Metallica the dollar sign killed them.Thats my opinion.

Ozzy with all do respect is probably the biggest sellout of them all, his music is tailored for the masses and he's had his own reality-show. I like his music, I find it pretty catchy, but it's hardly the good old roots.

Sh*t album. Worse than sh*t actually. As least sh*t has some use. Two minutes worth of material dragged out for 7-8 minutes on every song. That annoying as f*ck snare constantly pinging loudly at the front of the mix. Hetfield's trying too hard to sound gruff vocals. Childish lyrics ("I'm madly in anga with you!!!" - seriously, this sh*t sounds like it was written by a pissed off 14 year-old who just got grounded from his X-Box). Mid-life crisis metal.

I don't like Metallica, I used to upto about the black album but most of the stuff they have recorded in the past 15-20 years has been utter crap, may be one or two half-decent songs but nothing that stands up with the likes of their early stuff. As much as I dislike them (James and Lars) and their music though, it is hard to lay the blame with just Metallica, many other metal bands have "sold out" by appealing to a larger audience, may not be my type of music, may not like it but understand the need for them to develop their sounds, just a shame so many good bands have done that.

As for Ozzy, I like Sabbath, their early stuff with him, and the couple of albums they did with Dio as singer were their best stuff (IMO) but I think because of the way Ozzy acts towards the band that made his name, and the way he is so willing to do anything for money, he is a lot of censored words Gamespot won't let me use.

Terrible album - song length, snare sound, Hetfield's vocals, lack of solos, crappy tuning.

I'll stick with Justice.

For one they tried to hard to go back to their thrash metal roots and failed. Secondly that was the worst drumming on an album from Lars that I have ever heard. It sounded as though he was hitting home depot buckets. It was just a bad album.

Metallica's became irrelevant after the Black Album in 1991. Look strictly at what Metallica performed in just the 80s (from Kill Em All to ...And Justice For All), and they're I think the best metal band of all time.

Ride the Lightning was their magnum opus. St. Anger was the result of their pathetic downward spiral after the whole napster deal. At least they kind of redeemed themselves with death magnetic.

Not accurate. They filed motions against a few universities and produced lists of individual users who had downloaded their music from Napster, but they only ever actually persued legal action against Napster.
