I've never seen an episode of Star Trek in my life, but I saw the movie. That movie was amazing and I really enjoyed the plot, fighting, etc. My question is if the tv series is actually like this, because if it is...you've got yourself a new Trek fan :D

This new movie is nothing like the TV shows. That isn't a good or bad thing, but it's a fact. The new Star Trek movie was a good movie, but it was only "Star Trek" in name.

Go with The Next Generation. It is almost unanimously regarded as the best. The original series only had like 30 episodes anyway.

They're very different. The old series has an element of fun cheesiness that was totally absent in the movie. The movie was very flashy and full of special effects, obvious wit, bright colors, etc. The series has less for effects, first of all. The characters are fairly similar, but there are differences too. It's hard to explain a lot of the differences between the two. They're just executed very, very differently.

I saw the movie and thought it was amazing so I started watching the original series. It's nothing like the movie but it's still great.

Right there you can see Fred Luben's coffee mug!

And TOS, TNG and VOY are the best.

One thing all Star Treks fans can agree on is that the women were dressed better in the original series.

I like DS9 and Voyager a lot. TNG was good but Spock is definitely the best character ever.

The fact that William Shatner didn't do a voice over for the ending of the movie really pissed me off, though.

Spock was a good character, but he wasn't anywhere near as dynamic and interesting as Data. Hell, I'd even argue Tuvac was better than Spock. And Scotty was only remebered becasue of his accent. Same with Chekov.

Not really-Data and Spock are far more analogous than Spock and Riker. Both are science officers, either in official or unofficial capacities, both lack emotion, both are extremely intelligent, both don't fully understand humans.

Well, you pretty much took the words out of my mouth. Same thing goes for Seven of Nine. She wasn't in the smae position as Spock or Data, but still, she was reminiscent of them and was written as such. Although I guess you could say Tuvac was more of the comparison character when referring to Spock and Data. No matter how you look at it, Data is more badass than all of them combined.

The TV Series and the new movie are hardly alike (although I think they're both great). The new movie was all about big explosions in space, fast action, and cool effects, with some characters and references from the original series along for the ride.

Star Trek: The Original Series was a much slower affair. Episodes had very little in terms of effects or actions, but most of them (at least the ones before Season 3) had a real purpose about them. They were made to reflect on serious moral issues, and many of them do a really good job at it. Quite a few episodes of the show are just plain dumb (the show is a little TOO cheesy at times), but there are some real jems that are full of great acting and compelling storylines.

I never was a fan of the actual movies.. But as a Sci Fi fan, I liked the majority of the Star Trek movies.. I thought the movie had pretty good choices on the actor.. Though I think they could have chose a better actor that would have been more like William Shatner.. IMO I thought the actors were great, the plot was thin.. And the Plot devices were cliche and/or quite dumb... I completely despised the whole ice world thing with the "NOT TO WORRY we found something that will send youa impossible distance back to the matter making everything better again".. I can't count how many movies have I seen such a cliche variant.. Eric Banna's character was severely underdeveloped for a actor of his calibre..

The only series I ever really liked were The Next Generation and Voyager. I thought Deep Space Nine was kind of boring and I didn't care for the others. The only movies I liked were the ones with The Next Generation cast. I was pretty disappointed with the new movie.

Even though I loved the movie and it did actually feel like Star Trek to me, TOS and TNG are miles ahead of it and very different. You may like the series, but if you are expecting something closely resembling the movie...especially from TOS...then you are going to be disappointed.

Oh and btw,

Kirk>Picard

Spock>>>>>>>Data

McCoy>>>>>>>Beverly Crusher

Although I pretty much like Kirk and Picard equally for different reasons...as a Star Trek fan I have to choose.

TOS only went on for like 3 seasons. All of the fame from startrek came from TNG, DS9, & VOY. They all had 6+ seasons, and a huge fanbase. As for the movie, being what I would consider a strong startrek fan I like it, no problems with it. The TV shows are alot different. I think the shows more or less appealed to the star trek fan base. It didn't seem that there was any emphysis to incorporate new viewers, this is probably what made ENT fail after only a few seasons. If you relate it to Star Wars. There's people who like the movies & games, then there's people who read books and look up facts on the internet about the Star Wars Universe, the geeks if you will. Same goes for Startrek. There's people who like the films, then there's people who've watched the majority of the shows and read things like Star Trek Encyclopedia
