They're all good. Hard to decide. I hold a special affinity for Star Trek: The Next Generation or Voyager, but each is great in its own way.
Without the help of Star Wars, LOTR would not have been possiblechimpikiPretty sure you've got that backwards there, buddy.

Nah, all Star Wars was was a complete rip of LOTR, only set in space. If you don't believe me, tell me which I'm talking about with my description here..."A young boy sets out to accomplish something that no one thinks he can do. Along the way, his old, masterful, wise mentor dies in the first part of the trilogy, only to help the young boy from the after life. Various people of weird, different races join the boy in his adventure to help him stop the bad guys."Nah, all Star Wars was was a complete rip of LOTR, only set in space. not just that...star wars was a rip off of mythology in many ways potentially...greek, roman, egyptian, sumerian...take your pick. I was speaking of the success of the two in my comment.
EDIT: not to mention a borrowing of Judeo-Christian traditions....again, potentially.
Star Trek. Specifically The Next Generation & Voyager and the movie First Contact.Doom_HellKnight
I liked that one, but I'm so partial to Generations.

Both LotR and star wars conform to the concept of the monomyth. This is the idea that almost all mythologies from all over the world follow the same basic structure involving a young, innocent hero who goes on a journey of great danger and importance. There's more to it than that but i can't be bothered explaining it all. My point is, neither are rip offs of the other, they are both myths following the traditional mythical structure
The original Star Wars trilogy is my overall favourite, but LOTR is equal purely because it is such an epic story.
EDIT: Star Trek seems too conservative for me. But I haven't really seen enough of it to make a valid argument.

Did you just use the word's "Conservative" and "star trek" in the same sentence? You might be using conservative in a different context than i'm interpreting, but if you mean conservative as in ideology, you are so far off it's unbelievable. Star Trek is based of the premisis that all of Humanity has adopted Far Left socialism. Hell, being a conservative in the federation is pretty much outlawed...

I would have used the word "necessarily," but i get what you mean.
I would challenge any to find a story that is truly original.

Certainly not, I only meant the visual style and cinematography of the movies. Hence the latter part of the statement "I haven't really seen enough of it to make a valid argument". I was just referring to things like the costumes etc... I like to see Sci-Fi films that are wild and eccentric like The Fifth Element and Star Wars.
I know I'm probably still offending you seeing as you're obviously a Trek fan :P but I'm one of those people who grew up in the Star Wars universe.
