So I'm trying to figure out what to get with my B-day/Christmas money and I figured I needed atleast one more King novel. I just finished The Long Walk (see blog, good book) and read The Dark Tower and a few others. Does anyone have any favorites? I was thinking about Roadwork whish is suppossedely his least read book or The Stand although it's a giant one. Thanks!

My favorite of his is It. If you haven't read the Stand, then I highly recommend that one as well. Other than those, I really liked Gerald's Game and the novellas of Four Past Midnight.

Pet Semetary was pretty good. He said he thought it was his scariest, but I dunno. The concept is I guess, but The Shining was pretty freaky.

It was a good read, but the ending where all the kids do...well you know to that one girl seemed random and a bit creepy. Not in a good way either.

Pet Cemetary deperessed me first time I read it, nothing good happens in it, just death dread and pain. I can see why he thinks its the scariest, it is one of the more emotional stories he has written. Desperation is another good read.

Did you read The Regulators along with Desperation? I found a first edition copy of The Reg at a used book store and bought it just because it was cheap, but I've been wondering if I should read them together.

Indeed. There were so many shock factors in that book the first time I read it when I was 11 years old:P

Read Desperation first, its much better. Regulators isnt bad but it is very odd. Desperation is very gruesome and brutal though.

Grusome and brutal is cool. Have you read any of the other Bachman books? I liked The Long Walk... I was kind of angry that Rage is out of print (purposely of course).

I found a copy of rage mixed in with the other bachman books in a collection, dont know where though. Good story, shame it is so hard to find. The Long Walk is good but I liked The Running Man alot.

In a related note for anyone who cares, King's next novel Under the Dome will be published in the fall of 2009. It's expected to be a long one (about The Stand size). Should be interesting, can't wait! I'll have to work on Just After Sunset too, very cool cover.

I agree. I read both of them and found Desperation to be better. :) I think I had nightmares about recluse spiders for days after the book. ;D && I still think you should read The Regulators afterwards. :)

Needful Things I would say is one of his best books, but it's the end of the Castle Rock series.  I would definitely recommend that but if you want to pick up all of the references to what's going on in the twon then you would have to read the others, in order they go Dead Zone, Cujo, then Needful Things.

It, The Stand, The Shining, and Desperation are great books as well, although The Regulators involves all the same characters as desperation, I don't think it was nearly as good and kind of ended up being just plain silly.

Insomnia and the Talisman are good books which are underrated and not as well known of his.

If you want to go for uniqueness of story then you should definitely go for the novellas (Four Past Midnight, different seasons, as well as the Bachman Books) and his short stories (Night Shift, skeleton crew, nightmares and dreamscapes.  I feel that his short stories and novellas are overall better, more innovative and original than his full novels as many of those can eventually be seen as horror-by-the-numbers after you've read enough of them (I read almost all of his books up to bag of bones)

The Stand is Stephen King's best novel. The Shining is a classic. I also loved The Eyes of the Dragon and Dreamcatcher. That said, I have read many Stephen King books, including the ones above, and have enjoyed pretty much all of them. It's hard to go wrong with Stephen King.

If you're really interested in reading horror fiction I'd recommend branching off from just the Stephen King books, try reading some of the borderlands collections (not associated with the game) it's a collection of dark fantasy and horror and has some really great short stories, you'll also find a lot of different authors there and you can branch out from the short stories into some of their other work.

I just reread Eyes of the Dragon as I was pulling books from my old home for my fiance and remembered that that was more of a fantasy.  Really when I read it again it struck me how it seemed that it was more of an elaborate bedtime story that he was telling to his daughter and figured would make a good book, rather than a novel on its own.  You can just see it in the writing and the tone he uses through it.

I didn't know Needful Things was part of a series. I've read Cujo, but don't remember it having anything to do with Needful Things. Of course I read those books when I was like 10...

My absolute favorite King novel is IT. I've read that book at least five times, even though it's over 1,000 pages long. It's fantastic. I'd also recommend The Shining, The Dead Zone, Pet Sematary, Christine, etc.
