You can read the article here http://cultureshock.bangordailynews.com/2012/05/15/rockin-out/stephen-king-to-release-sequel-to-the-shining-speak-at-umass-lowell/ In summary "Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood winter, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his fathers legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant shining power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes Doctor Sleep. Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dans own demons and summons him to a battle for Abras soul and survival. On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmlessmostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the steam that children with the shining produce when they are slowly tortured to death. Doctor Sleep is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon." Thoughts?

Except most of his recent stuff that I've read hasn't been bad.

Sounds interesting. Might read.

It actually sounds not to bad. The evil old people sound bizarre enough that I want to read more about them.

Really? Any recommendations? I'll probably pick up The Wind Through the Keyhole (I think that's the name) simply because of it's relation to the dark tower series.

Under the dome was pretty good, as was Full dark No Stars and Just After Sunset. And if we're talking purely about books from the 2000's, Everything's Eventual is also good, as well as the dark Tower books, the later oens. (Although I didn't like the fifth that much.) Blaze, also great. Cell was all right, it was the first book I read by him so I kinda liked it.

I was discounting his short story collections because they're a different format and style entirely, but yes, Everything's Eventual was good. Just after Sunset is also on my list because it's a short story collection. I've heard good and bad things about Under the Dome, and it's just so long with such a low chance of enjoying it that I'm not sure I want to jump into it. I'll have to look into Full Dark, No Stars. Blaze is actually pretty old, and I enjoyed the Dark Tower series and most of what he wrote before.

I have difficulty enjoying works from his Cell/Lisey's Story/Duma Key onward years. Most of his stuff prior to that was great.

I stopped reading horror when I left my teens and King has lost the sparkle he had for it. Even when he was at his peek I was never really a fan tbh. Hard to read and takes ages to go any where for me. I prefered James Herbert (spelling) for the horror books. Rats and the other books in that series where better reads imho.

It almost sounds like a mixing of elements from the Dark Tower series and Insomnia. More so insomnia, I think.

It does sound kind of like Insomnia, which is not a good thing IMO because I thought Insomnia was a bit of a mess.

Well... I have to admit i enjoyed Insomnia despite it being a bit of a mess. It had a bit of a fairy tale element to it, and it left me searching for answers regarding who the Crimson King was.

I'll skip out on it I think, to be honest King's work has made a decline and sequels are rarely anything that good

Im hoping it is good as I'm a huge King fan. Just now finishing up a reread of the Dark Tower series and will read the 8th that just came out. This book definitly sounds more like newer SK rather than older. Some of his newer books are a little more "out there" in regards to paranormal and other worlds. I still havn't been dissapointed in them, but you can tell upon reading one of his if it is in his last 3rd of career or earlier 2 thirds.

As for the question for recommendations for newer SK books, I'd recommend Under the Dome, Full Dark No Stars and Duma Key. I have heard 11/22/63 is good but I havn't had the chance to read it yet.

It did have a mysterious atmosphere. I'll give it that.

Interesting. I was really disappointed that he didn't go more into detail about the "shining" in the original book, so I'm glad there is a sequel.
