So, What do you think? Are stereotypes total lies used to bash a certain group of people? or are there actually alot of people who fit the stereotype, making it true?

EDIT:

AHA apparently Cracked has some true stereotypes 8)

Stereotypes are based on a person's past experience with a particular group of people. By definition, stereotyping is the "because one is like this, they are all like this" mindset

So yes, some do fit the stereotype. How can anyone say that stereotypes aren't based on half-truths? It's a stereotype that all Italians (mainly Sicilians, for which I am) are in the Mafia. Yes, some are. Most are not.

A lot of stereotypes can be argued as silly nilly stuff. But there are some that are freaking proved by statistics. Something I won't go "lalalala~" to.

Stereotypes are generally started by reversing the order at which something is true. "Most Italians are in the mafia", is not true. "Most mafia members are Italian", is true as it is an Italian organization. Because the Mafia is primarily made of Italians, people associate Italians with the mafia. Then a stereotype is born.

The entire country almost starved to death because of a blight that killed a lot of potatoes. I don't think anyone ever questioned how much you guys like potatoes.

Not always though. "All lawyers are Jews" is just as bad as "All jews are lawyers", yet this is a very common stereotype, often not meant maliciously. I say as I put off my studying that will hopefully get me into law school :P

Stereotype, by definition, a: to repeat without variation : make hackneyed.

There is a lot of research showing that traits within a certain group of people are either rules set up by that group or rules that are established from one group to another.

They are obviously based on truth, but truth is a subjective word so...

You can see stereotypes all around you if that's what you want to see, but I don't know what that would accomplish. It may be cold, but stereotypes just make life more convenient. I don't expect people to act within a stereotype, but I can't say I'm surprised when they do.

Truth. I don't know why people consider it offensive. If you're using a stereotype properly, you're aware that it doesn't apply to everyone.

This not is always true at all. Actually, this is probably not true most of the time.

Refer to the Italian mafia example.

Oh I see. I assumed that in your original post you were referring to the stereotype that all arabs are radical Muslims, when you actually meant the stereotype of all Muslims, regardless of race(you not being an arab) are radical Muslims. In that case, I'd say you're certainly not a stereotype.

A lot people also don't realize that their stereotypes only apply to that specific region. For instance the Stereotypes about black people in the America are COMPLETELY different from the stereotypes in Japan.

There's several reasons why stereotypes might be perpetuating without said stereotype being true.

They seem to result from either 1. generalizing actual patterns / tendancies 2. generalizing visible/vocal minorities to a larger group (i.e. al qaeda terrorist = person of the Islamic faith.)

To elaborate more on relationship of publicity and exposure

Muslims for example, most people have very low, limited exposure to the muslim community. They don't know anything about them, yet the only publicity they see about muslim is terrorism and protests leading to generalizations. Media plays a big role in the creation of stereotypes.
