Overall I would say I prefer Ridley Scott, he is more consistant these days and less predictable. His films these days are mostly better than Spielburg's. The only spielburg films I have liked this decade were Munich, Catch me if you can, and Minority Report to a point even though the plot is a bit ridiculous. The Terminal was ok too, but Ridley Scott's films are mostly better recently, I really enjoyed Matchstick men, Gladiator, Body of lies, A good year, and American Gangster. He has had a few misses though.

Spielburg certainly has more variety (although Matchstick Men was a fantastic movie and very un-Ridley-like) but I'd agree that I prefer Ridley Scott. Other than Blade Runner I loved Gladiator, Matchstick Men, and the director's cut of Kingdom of Heaven. The only recent Spielburg movie I can remember enjoying is Minority Report. Beyond that I just start thinking of War of the Worlds and I start crying inside.

American Gangster and Body of Lies weren't very good... well, the former was good, but not as great as I thought it'd be. I enjoyed Catch Me if You Can, Munich and Minority Report, though, and I agree with your sentiment on The Terminal. Really, I grew up watching Spielberg's films; not so much Scott's. Have you seen Kingdom of Heaven, though? That was done really well (Scott film). In this decade, I'd have to choose Spielberg, but I'm still a fan of Scott.

Both are hit and miss.

Really, as much as I'm not really a fan of Spielberg... I think he gets my vote on the power of Schindler's List.

Kingdom of heaven was pretty good too. My favorite film of his is still Blade Runner though I loved The Dualists.

I did enjoy Munich, and I'd also forgotten that he directed Catch Me If You Can, which I also enjoyed. I also have a weakness for Jaws and ET, having grown up with them. But then again, I also grew up with Aliens and Blade Runner.

Gonna go with the Ridler. I just enjoy more of his movies and Spielberg seems to have an unhealthy fascination with aliens...at times even shoehorning an alien presence into a movie and ruining it as a result (Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the advanced future robots in AI) I think Spielberg has more good films, but I've enjoyed Ridley's stuff more overall.

If that's the case, I guess you could be accused of undervaluing Spielberg as well, so I suppose it all balanced out. Sure you didn't mention Alien or Thelma & Louise....but you also didn't mention Close Encounters, E.T., Jaws, Indiana Jones, Hook or Jurassic Park. The fact those movies got cut but Minority Report and AI made it is a bit of a head scratcher.

...pretty simple, Minority Report and AI, IMO are much better then all those other Speilberg films you mentioned. I went with those I thought were their BEST...its only a head scratcher in your eyes, for me it makes perfect sense.

They both have alot of talent, and even though Ridley is actually more inspirational imo, I'm going to have to go with Spielberg. The sheer quantity of amazing films this man has made, makes it very hard to pin down his best, while Ridley is much easier in that case.

Saving Private Ryan

Amistad

Schindler's List

Jurassic Park

Hook

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Jaws

Terrible films by Spielberg:

War of the Worlds

1941

Great films by Scott:

Black Hawk Down

Gladiator

Blade Runner

Alien

Terrible films by Scott:

Body of Lies

Hannibal

G.I. Jane

Black Rain

Spielberg has more great films than Scott, and less terrible films. Spielberg wins.

In Ridley's defense, Body of Lies and Hannibal are not "terrible". Also you forgot Thelma and Louise (good movie)

I would go with Spielberg over Scott despite worshipping at the church that is Ridley. Spielberg actually takes more chances than Ridley Scott. I've never really seen Scott take many chances later in his career than he did earlier on. Spielberg has actually taken on project that were not your typical SPielberg blockbuster projects but more personal (The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Schindler's List, Amistad, Munich). While Spielberg's storytelling-style can get a touch maudlin at times he's always brought something new to his filmmaking. Ridley Scott will always have great and breathtaking visuals (he was an art director first and foremost coming up), but at times his artistic eye in making the visuals stand out comes at sacrificing storytelling.
