Students at a California High School are dismissed from school on May 5th for wearing a US Flag on their shirt. May 5th just so happens to be the Mexican Holiday of Cinco de Mayo; the school board must have forgotten that California is still a US State not Mexican, why else would wearing US flags by US Citizens on US soil be deemed insulting?

That's rather shocking. I can understand the removal of the bandannas (dress code in schools can be strict at times) but the shirts? That's ridiculous.

"But to many Mexican-American students at Live Oak, this was a big deal. They say they were offended by the five boys and others for wearing American colors on a Mexican holiday."

Funny. I thought we lived in the United States of America, not Mexico.

The administrators of this school should be dismissed for treason. It's pretty absurd.

Seriously. I couldn't care less what people in other countries wear on the Fourth of July. I'm not sure I'd even care if I saw people in the US wearing Mexican flag shirts on the Fourth. Then they stage a walk out because the shcool administration apologized. Seriously? If you want to be a part of society, you have to act like you're a part of it, not against it.

Wow, this story is pretty old. Anyway, the kids wearing the American teeshirts are looking to piss someone off, however I don't care. It's their right to do so. What I don't get is why anyone would be offended, seeing as Cinco de Mayo celebarates a Mexican victory against the French. Failure on part of the kids wearing the shirts, the administators, and the Mexican American kids (who are american and shouldn't be offended anyway).

5 de Mayo is a national holiday on Mexico, i should know, i'm Mexican. No school, everyone knows the holiday and there is a battle recreation every year on the place where the battle took place. It is a big deal (:

Yep, but I don't get why anyone is offended. It was a battle against the French, and I think Lincoln even helped out with the entire war.

So if I convince a student to wear an American flag shirt at that school on St. Patrick's Day, and I have a few Irish complain about it. I wonder if that school would do anything...

This is really absurd. I'm glad this is getting media attention because that school's administration acted in a ridiculous manner. First off, I highly doubt that the Mexican-American kids were truly offended. Kids these days will say and do anything to get attention, and everyone is so dang sensitive now, we have to put up with it or be called racist/intolerant/etcetera. This is just plain stupid.

And it is those student's rights to do so. By the actions that were taken against them I would say that foreign interests have priority over US Citizen's rights in the State of California, and that is sad state of affairs for any US Citizen residing in that state.

How is this story old? It happened four days ago and was reported yesterday. I would say that it is sad that it took so long to report.

As far as the failure on the kid's part, why should American Citizens by punished for not honoring a foreign holiday?

What angered me too was seeing all those hispanic kids running around with the Mexican flag up in the air-- if you think your country is so great, go back to it. That's insulting as an American citizen seeing hundreds of people running around with Mexican flags on U.S soil.

No, you misunderstand. I'm saying they were obviously trying to piss the Mexican Americans off. However, their method doesn't make any sense seeing as Cinco de Mayo has nothing to do with America and Mexico fighting, rather France and Mexico fighting. I don't believe they should be punished, though. It's freedom of expression.

Absolutely.

It's ridiculous that kids can't wear their own nation's flag on their clothes.

I don't give a **** if the administrators were just trying to be politically correct or not. They should lose their jobs and learn when to stay out of other people's business.

There is nothing wrong with wearing the T-shirt of an American flag any day of the year. Considering the 5th of May isn't an official national holiday. Just like there isn't anything wrong with displaying the colors of your heritage on an unofficial national holiday.

I can understand if they did it on purpose and by the sounds of it happening at a school, they did it on purpse just because thats what some school kids do lol. Although it seems like a dangerous thing to do since I know alot of americans are extremely patriotic and in england we have this problem with the st georges flag being shown (this is mainly due to drunk "english" people getting drunk and beating up people and causing loads of problems) but its more dangerous when it turns into the "we can not show are flags" even though you are allowed too (like in england shops sell them pubs have them outside etc) yet we get 1000's of people making it even worse and then a hate campaign against in our case "forginers" lol

It's nothing new, over here there are people that consider displaying a Dutch flag outside of the national holidays racist. It goes to show how far political correctness can go.

This. Its not so big over in Mexico. Its just an American excuse to eat Tacos, and, in my case, to rub it in to the French students that Spanish is the better language than French. There is quite a rivalry at my school about that.

The story is totally stupid on all three sides.

- The administration shouldn't have given a damn about the kids were wearing in an American school on a Mexican holiday. The only thing Cinco de Mayo is to Americans is yet another alcohol holiday. So what if there would be a fight on campus? Blame the kids who get offended by the American flag while on American soil.

- The Mexican-American students should give a damn about someone wearing a shirt with an American flag on it in America. This isn't Mexico.

"I think they should apologize cause it is a Mexican Heritage Day," Annicia Nunez, a Live Oak High student, said. "We don't deserve to be get disrespected like that. We wouldn't do that on Fourth of July."

Seriously, this isn't ****ing Mexico.

- The accused students and their parents are idiots for being another group of stupid, falsely-patriotic Americans.

"I think it's absolutely ridiculous," Julie F. Maciel's mom, said. "All they were doing was displaying their patriotic nature. They're expressing their individuality."

Patriotism isn't individuality, lady.

Not really. In fact not at all. Taken to extreme perhaps....but there is nothing wrong with pride in the achievements of one's country. It's the lack of interest in one's country that is leading to the loss of identity in some countries....which will soon cease to have a distinct culture.

He's not being censored. He can wear whatever he wants any other day. They were being jerks, let's be honest here. It was a deliberate effort to rile up the hispanic students. They're not minding their own business being oppressed, they were TRYING to cause trouble.

Which does not mean censoring others.....;)

He's not being censored. He can wear whatever he wants any other day. They were being jerks, let's be honest here. It was a deliberate effort to rile up the hispanic students. They're not minding their own business being oppressed, they were TRYING to cause trouble.

Cinco de Mayo is NOT an holiday in the states....just an excuse to drink. Nonetheless, the US flag should never be censored in the US. The school was out of line. If someone choose to fight about it...they should be suspended.

St Patrick's day isn't an official holiday in the UK. It's mostly just an excuse to drink. If i deliberately went out of my way to rile up Irish people though i'd expect to have a few people tell me to stop being a douche.
