I have an incredibly odd desire to live on Mars... I don't know why though (of course in a habitable environment created so that I can survive for longer than a few minutes, or terraforming).

Speaking of terraforming...

I feel jealous that I won't live to see the day we terraform another planet.

What's terraforming?RabidChocobo1

I think terraforming is converting a planet to behave like earth so it has a good atmosphere like our planet, one way we can do is setup some future machine which can conver iron oxide on planet mars to ozone and so on.

doesn't mars have CO2 in it's atmospere? If thats the case all we have to do is plant some trees and they will create oxygen for the ozone.

Well I am a engineer I don't know much about bio however would the trees be able to survive in just CO2 atmospere without nitrogen and also harmful sun rays because of no Ozone. Maybe they use some kind of machine which converts CO2 into O3 and than once the ozone(O3) is placed I think you might be able to add trees than.

If it were that simple, it would already be done. . . .

Doubtful. Terraforming requires a massive amount of resources and we still haven't even sent humans to Mars for exploration purposes and that alone will cost a fortune. You have to create an atmosphere that is similar to Earth's, that means you will require a massive load of Nitrogen, Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide. Which of the three, Nitrogen being the least abundant on Mars.

The Oxygen won't be a problem but the Nitrogen will be.

unless we bio-engineer trees to survive in extreme conditions, now that would be revolutionary in space exploration. we'll only have to send a probe with a highly self-reproductive plant, that will eventually do the job for us.

Well if you mean making Mars another earth then you might not live to see it. But you still could see us colonize it is what I meant.

Then you should have said colonize. :P I doubt we will colonize Mars either in my lifetime. That is a massive endeavour that although not as large as terraforming, still is at least 40 or 50 years in the future and even then will be extremely primitive in terms of amount of people and I won't ever be able to experience it.
