WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Americans have a right to own guns for self-defense and hunting, the justices' first major pronouncement on gun rights in U.S. history.

5-4 decision strikes down Washington D.C.'s ban on handguns. Certainly interesting to know that the Supreme Court hasn't ruled on the 2nd Amendment since it was created.

Thoughts and opinions?

I sure hope this ends all of the silly debate whether the amendment applied to individuals. But antigun nuts will just come up with some weird new twist.

For now. I am the happiest I have been in years. Seriously. This is a great day to be an U.S. citizen. People underestimate the importance of this ruling.

Well, not according to anti-gun types, who make the claim that the second ammendment only refers to the maintainance of a state-run militia.

This ruling, however, supports the interpretation that the second ammendment is designed to protect the rights of individuals to own weapons of self-defense and hunting. Should be interesting to see how this ruling affects current gun bans and future calls for gun bans.

seems to be the correct ruling. if the constitution permits it, how can a city overrule that permission?

so what if we get attacked, and we have nothing to defend ourselves with?If guns were banned, that would be bad.

Attacked? By who? It's not as if you're living in eastern Europe.

I don't feel like debating this though, since it's none of my business.

So it took a Supreme Court Ruling to tell the country something that's been in the Constitution for over 200 years? And people ask why our government fails so hard...

Whats sad is it was a 5-4 decision we need more judges that look to the Constitution for their decisions and not trying to push the country to the left or right.

Frankly I think gun control is one of the Democrats' good positions. The Second Amendment is outdated to say the least.
But what can you do at this point. . . .

Wow 2 for 2!

The Supreme Court is really screwing up this week.

First child rapists are allowed to live.

Now it's ok to let people who have no business having guns buy them.

What a joke.

good, i plan to get a handgun, my friends dad was carjacked, two guys came up when he was sitting in his car and opened the door and had knives and said get out, if he had a gun those guys would be running away only to feel two bullets hit there legs, in the famous words of GTA4 "Stay safe, stay second ammendment."ryangb
That might not have been a good idea....I imagine if he tried to pull a gun on them when two guys with knives were in close quarters.....well, I'll just say it's better he's alive.

its stupid, if we get rid of the right to handguns then people who use them wrongly are going to buy them illegally anyway, and no one will be able to defend themselves unless the police arive fast enough

:| How many people defend themselves with handguns now? How many times do you hear on the news: "Well, the man broke into his home and pulled a knife on him, but thank God he had a gun!" In addition to this, people who own handguns typically can't get to them in time to stop any would-be robber.

Against who? Criminals? You got the law enforcement for that. Russians? You got the military for that. Arabs? CIA/FBI.

It surprises me how little faith the Americans put in their law enforcement. Clearly there's something wrong with the country if people think the police is nearly useless. I find it so odd that people think the solution is to give everyone the means to kill each other. "But you got to defend yourself." Yeah, this way you'll always have to live in fear.

He might get stabbed to death or they might come back the next time with guns to take revenge and shoot your friend's dad. Life isn't like a video game, smart***.

If you want the vid, it should be all over YT. This situation I think triggered the decision as to if its ok for civilians to carry weapons.

The problem with carrying a handgun for protection is a) the word protection is ambiguous and b) people can be pretty damn stupid. What constitutes protection? Some guy threatening you with a knife? Someone breaking into your house? The Queen coming into your house and bossing you around? Someone threatening to key your car? At what point is it acceptable to use any sort of weapon? Even law enforcement officers, who are (IIRC) are only allowed to use firearms if a person's life is in immediate danger have different interpretations of the rules.

As for stupidity, I'll be the first person to admit that despite the fact I see myself as a pacifist and I avoid conflict, if you push me hard enough I will not be able to control my actions. Although I think I'm a responsible and intelligent person, I know that there have been situations in the past where if I or someone else was armed, someone very well could have been injured or killed. I would most definitely regret any violent actions, but I can't guarentee that I would be able to consider the concequences "in the moment". Now if you trust my self evaluation, imagine what would happen if other, less responsible and/or intelligent people were armed?

That's exactly what bothers me about civilians using guns. Policemen will go a very, VERY long way to AVOID firing their guns, even if the suspect is armed. But civilians, they just grab their guns and shoot without even thinking it through.

it seems pretty obvious to me that owning a handgun is a SELF DEFENSE mechanism not a key my car defense or someones bossing me around so ill blast them defense. yes people can be stupid with guns, but if they were illegal the people who are stupid with guns, would still be stupid without a gun, and then they would buy a gun illegally and be stupid with guns again

the poin is if someone came into my house and threatened my life i would take out my handgun and put a bullet between their eyes

That doesn't make any sense.

Criminalizing handguns does nothing to prevent criminals from having guns, all it does is ensure that only the criminals have guns. Thinking that they have the right or option to remove our GOD GIVEN right to protect ourselves is just asinine. This government was never here to tell me what god given rights I have, they should defend the constitution and do their damn job instead of wasting time over this. Regardless of the outcome of their decisions, theres no way in heaven or hell I'd hand my gun over to a corrupted governement such as this one...

Its an important decision, but an unsurprising one.

[QUOTE="Dracargen"]Frankly I think gun control is one of the Democrats' good positions. The Second Amendment is outdated to say the least.
But what can you do at this point. . . .Tjeremiah1988

its stupid, if we get rid of the right to handguns then people who use them wrongly are going to buy them illegally anyway, and no one will be able to defend themselves unless the police arive fast enough

:| How many people defend themselves with handguns now? How many times do you hear on the news: "Well, the man broke into his home and pulled a knife on him, but thank God he had a gun!" In addition to this, people who own handguns typically can't get to them in time to stop any would-be robber.

My state has a 'Make My Day' law and it works. On local news you here "Thieves shot dead while robbing man's house" quite often.

I don't think it has to do with defense etc. as it has to do with basic freedom.

and I also heard on the news when this Texan seen a house get robbed, call the police but couldn't wait for them to arrive so he grabbed his gun, confronted the robbers and shot them both dead. If you want the vid, it should be all over YT. This situation I think triggered the decision as to if its ok for civilians to carry weapons.

mmmmmkkkk - so then it turned out they were relatives of the house owners who were invited over, but didn't have keys so they had to enter a back window... the guy who shot them THOUGHT they were criminals.... Now HE'S the murderer.

I can make up stuff too.

That's a nice story and all but he didn't make it up.

yea. Also, I fount the tape http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLtKCC7z0yc

Guy just couldnt wait to try out his shotgun. FastForward to 5:30 if you dont feel like waiting.

I don't have speakers. Did the burglars have guns or knives?

What a crock of BS. Cops routinely shoot people with nothing to back up their stories, the police in america are far more militarized than you must know about. They shoot 80 year old women with reckless abandon, and pump more than 20 shots into people who just attempt to run away from them on routine stops. The cops in america have become pathetically immoral and damaging to this nation. I would hardly trust an "officer" farther than i could log throw him/her.

[QUOTE="sonicare"]In other words, they agreed with the second ammendment. . . . .LJS9502_basic
And as such they all get the right to wear the Captain Obvious hat today...

Seriously, how was there a debate about this? This amendment has been in place for nearly 220 years!

A handgun is supposed to be used as a self defense mechanism, but like I said some people aren't smart enough to consider that when they're really pissed off. As I said, I like to think I'm an intelligent and reasonable person, but I admit I have a temper. 99.9% of the time I can keep it under control, but if you give me a weapon that 0.1% of the time, there's a good chance someone will end up in the hospital or the morgue.

So if my self-asessment is right and I am more intelligent and responsible than the average person, imagine what would happen if you armed people with average or below average levels of those characteristics? Someone with true rage issues? Someone who already has no regard for the rules or responsibility like a drunk driver? Hell some normal individual who's just having a really ****ty day? If I can't always predict and control my actions (and I like to think I know myself pretty well), I don't want someone I don't know carrying a weapon.

Exactly. If the people that are supposed to be the most responsible and are supposed to follow strict rules can't control their actions and tell the difference between when you should and should not use a firearm, do you honestly expect the average person to?
