I wanted to share this article

http://pewforum.org/other-beliefs-and-practices/u-s-religious-knowledge-survey.aspx

this shows that, on average, atheists know more about religion than the religious do.

so much for the claims that we atheists "just dont understand Christianity and the Bible."

I posted this a few months ago. People who truely understand religion aren't religious IMO.

You're really using a scant 32 questions survey covering a variety of religions to claim that atheists know more about Christianity than Christians do?

dkdk999

exactly. If you read the bible cover to cover you'd have to be pretty mentally ill to believe it.

Any of the holy books really, lets not just single out the bible.

Yeah there are some good things found in religion, but for the most part religion is an instrument of control or an institution of mere habit.

From the article:

"On questions about Christianity – including a battery of questions about the Bible – Mormons (7.9 out of 12 right on average) and white evangelical Protestants (7.3 correct on average) show the highest levels of knowledge. Jews and atheists/agnostics stand out for their knowledge of other world religions, including Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Judaism."

In other words, atheists know more than Christians about religions... other than Christianity.

Was coming to post this, but was beaten to the punch. Found it fairly interesting how it broke down when I first read the results however.

A lot of popular depiction of the Bible really isn't in there. Atheist are probably disappointed that Jesus did not indeed slay Garyx.

It's an eye opener for sure. I saw a similar report in a video a while back.

What really surprised me was the representative quiz they have linked to that survey. I took it and it felt extremely easy.

The survey was just asking basic mundane facts, too; there was really nothing involving an actual "understanding" in the typical sense of the word. Fairly interesting results, but, as in all other things, people tend to read into statistical data whatever they want.

Also, I think I should note this particular graph:

In other words, being an atheist is largely a proxy for other factors, such as a higher level of education; being non-religious does not in itself imply that one is more knowledgeable about religions.

I scored 13/15

The only thing this survey proves about Catholics is we know less about other religions than some, but we'd still know more of our own...

And atleast my results show that not all Catholics no little about other religions.

I'm surprised only 19% percent of Catholics know that Job is the suffering figure out of the 4 choices...

Exactly. Besides, the only people who really know that much about religions are those who realize that most of them were based on Ancient Alien visitations, and most of them worship the same Gods with different names.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that. It is known however that if you were to group people based on various levels of intelligence (meaning education and general knowledge etc.) the percentage being atheist will increase as the intelligence level of the group increases. Being religious doesn't make someone less intelligent or an atheist more intelligent its just a statistical fact.

Still feel like this survey shouldn't be taken seriously.

Atheists have studied religion enough to know it's a crock, so obviously they know more than any religious person. Great success.

For the record, 14/15, but that was a really simple test.

I just took that quiz and I got 87% (13 from 15) and I'm a Christian. Only two I got wrong was "Which Bible figure is most closely associated with remaining obedient to God despite suffering?", for which I put Abraham instead of Job, and "Which one of these preachers participated in the period of religious activity known as the First Great Awakening?", for which I had no idea.

I went to a religious high school, so we did 6 years of studies of religion. We spent the majority of time on Christianity, however we did 2 sessions of Judaism, a session on Aboriginal Dreamtime, and a session on Buddhism. I consider myself quite knowledgeable on religion, though I'd never think of taking it up at university-level

The more educated people become the less religious they become. Can you guess why that could be?

13/15. The two I got wrong were more trivia then religion. All the religious facts I got right. We studied other religions in Bible study last year, that helped.

It's factual that the higher you go up the education ladder the more liberal you become therefore the more atheist you become.
