That's an old wives' tale. Your body doesn't do anything with it, but that means it just passes through your intestines intact.

Usually it's harmless, but in rare cases, it can cause some intestinal problems. Most foods that don't digest easily can though (seeds etc) so gum is no different.

Ive swallowed it before by accident like yesterday while excercising so far i havnt died from it so no worries.

I prefer not to swallow my gum. I'd rather just chew it, taste it, and spit it out in a trash can somewhere.

I don't think anything bad happens if you do swallow gum. I wouldn't make it a habit though.

i swallowed it since i first started chewing. nothing bad has happened (well not from swallowing gum :P)

why to swallow? if you have been chewing gum, why not chew it little longer and throw it when you find a wastebin. or uyou can wrap it in a paper or something and keep it till you find a place to disppose

Sure it can.

Hell...I'm sure that many people here can confirm this, but the stuff dissolves in your mouth if you chew it too long. And if the digestive enzymes in your saliva are enough to dissolve chewing gum, then the stronger acids in your stomach will absolutely dissolve the hell out of it.

It didn't stay in my alimentary canal for seven years the time I swallowed it, the very next time I used the bathroom some of my feces looked pinkish. Gross, but it's 100% true.
