I don't know why, but I'm starting to find swearing in humor really annoying and obnoxious. I don't really mind the occasional B or S word, and can even tolerate a few F bombs. But when the F bombs are flying more than kites at a kite convention, it tends to ruin the comedy for me. I read web comics a lot, and sometimes, I just wish they would leave that language out, like in Penny Arcade. They can just be so foul sometimes. That's why when I make my comics, I mask the swearing when I really feel the characters have to swear. I've only made two exceptions, but that's because it just wouldn't work masked. I also tend to be bothered when there's too much cussing in rap, but I digress.

Does excessive swearing ruin your comedy for you?

I don't mind excessive swearing in humor, but it definitely doesn't make anything funnier for me to hear tons of it.

I agree. The swear words are much more powerful when used sparingly. Some of these so-called comedians are boring when they use too many swear words.

There is all kinds of humour. Whatever fits, fits I guess. Some people enjoy what others do not. Pretty simple.

It's only bad if it relies on it as the joke, like that PA cartoon I saw a while ago.

The key to any good joke is a well placed swear. Overuse of them just loses meaning in the joke itself.

Saying the B word at the end of a sentence can make must jokes an instant winner. Not that I care much for cussin anyway.

And just stop with these topics. Dinner over to cussing? What's next, man? What's next?

It derives and creates characters. You used Penny Arcade as an example. The two main characters are avid gamers, and the average gamer does typically curse quite a bit, especially during online gameplay. The author is simply making that character fit into their presence more. This goes along with every other form of comedy. The presence or absence of curse words defines the character.

And no, I'm not bothered by it. I just don't listen, watch or read what I don't like.

**** if I know. Really, it doesn't bother me, but I curse all the time. I really have to restrain from cursing even when I type but I probably average out 6 or 7 asterisks per post. It's just the way I was raised talking so it seems natural when other people do it.

It can be good if it's a parody of stupid people. But other than that, I too find it annoying.

Pinnacle?

Anyways, swearing can be funny if used sparsely. Otherwise, it tends to dilute one's humour and make one appear dependant on cheap laughs that aren't a product of smart humour.

Even though I swear a lot, I'd prefer that swearing be left out of comedy acts.

well sometimes it annoys me a lot, especially when you get this lame guy that only does comedy and uses gross sexual humour over and over, It gets kinda weird.

I like a lot of swearing when you can belive it, when the person seems really frustrated or goes on a rant about some little thing that sets them off.

Sometimes it adds to the effect. Some of Lewis Black's material, for example, either wouldn't be as funny or just wouldn't work without the excessive swearing. But I know what you mean, and I agree in many circumstances.
