Last Friday afternoon, Damian Fernandez and his 15-year-old sister, Deanne Fernandez, were home alone at their northwest Miami-Dade County home while their parents were at work when they heard knocking on the front door. Moments later, two men were prying the front door unlocked, prompting Deanne to hide in her closet. "I was so scared", she said.

As her brother slept in the next room, the burglars ransacked their parents' room, taking some jewelry before moving on to what they were really after -- a PlayStation 3. According to a police report, one of the burglars kicked in Deanne's bedroom door. She said she could see his foot through the closet panels. The burglar found the empty PlayStation 3 box and ran out of the room, but Damian was waiting for him. "Once I saw him take off running back, I jumped off my bed and I grabbed my sword and I just waited for him", he said. Damian said he lunged at him with his samurai sword, striking him in the chest. "He freaked out", Damian said. The burglar ran out of the house with Damian chasing him down the road. When police arrived, a K-9 officer located the burglar hiding behind a neighbor's palm tree. The second burglar got away.Local10

This guy is my hero.

He probably didn't want to slaughter him. If he's brown belt in Karate, surely he can easily control his mind during such a situation

If he didn't want to kill the guy, he shouldn't have attacked him with a sword in the first place.

First rule of gun safety is that you never point a gun at someone, let alone shoot at them, unless you intend to kill them. Exact same thing applies to swords.

I'll bet that it was a fake sword. Which makes this about equivalent to trying to defeat an opponent with a toy light-saber.

Hence the term "fake sword"
Well, sharp or not, he did a stabbing motion which should have hurt him pretty badly if it was sharp or not.
Btw, hows it going with that girl at work? ;)

First, as it's a teenager in a karate class, it's probably a stainless steel wall hanger made from 440 stainless, with a hex or octagonal crosssection, and ground in fake hamon. In other words, probably something along the quality of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMYrhGxpO0w

Second, katanas do take a bit of training to use. The average person picking up a sword will tend to swing it like a baseball bat, a katana basically needs to be used in a slicing motion.

watch this, you'll see he never hacks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rA4mSKGmwA

That was impressive (the second video). The speed and technique impressed me enough, but it wasn't until I read that the mats have the resistance and consistancy of a human limb that I was blown away. I mean, I thought he was just cutting straw or something easy to slice, but he's cutting something that would take the normal person a few hacks to get through in just one swing.

Anyway, for most people the quality of a sword isn't going to matter if you're trying to scare an intruder off/injure them. As long as it looks like it could kill, or has a good chance of doing so, it's good enough. You can kill a person with a sharpened toothbrush, so a three foot metal blade is going to work to your advantage. Unless the other guy has a gun, in which case its stupid to charge at them with a sword, even if you can quickly turn them into sushi.

This goes to show if you own a very expsensive, enjoyable gaming console in live in a medium/low class neighborhood, you better have a suitable means of defending it.
