My dad told me that he doesn't want me working because I am too young (i'm 16 and I am legally able to work) and he wants me to enjoy my childhood because he knows from experience that working from an early age can really ruin your childhood. That is my dad's beliefs. Others say that a teen should work to learn the value of money. Do you believe that a teen should enjoy his teenage years, or should learn the value of money and begin working as soon as he can.

I got a job at 14, it's nice. Gets you money, shows you responsibility, and as long as you don't get booked for too mayn hours, school and social life don't get impacted.

Getting a summer job at 16 isn't going to ruin your childhood (if you can even call 16 childhood). Your dad is babying you.

if you are 16 working wont ruin anything.  only way working could hurt someone's childhood is if they worked in a sweatshop starting at the age of 5

Well what he told me is that why start working, even if its part time, when you are going to work for the rest of your life after you finish school. He also told me that my main concern should be school and baseball and I shouldn't worry about anything else. But i don't believe that he is babying me, since he demands a lot from me like straight As and such.

Improvise...

I make nearly $100 US a month for 3 hours or work, perhaps even less, all on the internet. I'm 16, and I still enjoy my childhood. Anyways, moral is, find solutions.

Your dad is on the right track, you need to work so you can pay for your car, GF, etc. but don't overdue it.  Enjoy life, money isn't everything.

Its all depends on how many hours, during college I work 7-9 hours a week, thats enough. I figure I'll be working for the next 30 years once I graduate, till then I'm going to enjoy college. This summer though I have a summer internship, 40 hours a week, yet this is just for the summer, I wouldn't dare work over 10 during college.

I did too at 13 and guess what? My grades went down and I felt depressed all the time. I quit 3 months later after my parents told me I didn't have to work at such a young age (think I wanted some expensive electronic thing at the time).  Hold out on working as long as you can, corporate America will own you sooner or later.

You know what I think?

Before I started working part time I really wanted to have a job so I could earn my money, and plenty of it to. It was pretty good at first to, it definetly changed my life alot. I lost alot of weight and became the skinny rocker kid instead of the fat squirrel-faced kid. I learned how to manage my money very well and saved up lots to put away in the bank. Finally, I had the leisure of going out and doing things I wanted to do, buy some junk for myself, etc.

Now after 16 months of working part time I've noticed that life has been falling deep in the trenches. I was always doing work, whether it be at school or at my job, never getting a chance to just lay off and relax. But aside from being tired all the time, there were other things that were starting to drag my life down into depression. My school grades were sinking, my job was getting more and more frustrating as the months passed by, and I noticed that I was also at a serious lack of friends and spent most of my time alone, not even with my own mother. My life had felt empty with no accomplishments and contained nothing but anger and suffering.

So now I believe that it should be illegal to work under the age of at least 18. Having a part time job really can ruin your childhood, its good if you do it for a little while like maybe for a year or over the summer (dont recommend it though), but after a while its going to start taking over your life and before you know it things are completely different than you last checked.

I started with my first "real" job working at a grocery store at age 16.  I've worked throughout college as well and would argue that by working, you can actually have a better social life than you had before.  Besides the obvious yet very important life lesson that nothing in this world is free, working somewhere allows you to branch out and meet new people.  In high school and before, I rarely met new people because I had known the the people I went to school with for my whole life.  A job outside of that really helps you open up to new people and tears down a lot of the social anxiety that grips a lot of people.  I met some of my closest friends whilst working in the dining commons.  I met my girlfriend at work too.  I've also had a few jobs that were just plain fun; the type of job where you want to come in and visit even on your days off.  Most people look back to their first few jobs favorably, I'm no exception.  By working while attending school, you also learn how to better manage your time, a trait that is crucial once you enter college and the workforce.  Sure, there have been plenty of instances where I wanted to hang out with my friends but had to work instead, but I think that overall, I'm much better off for it.  I believe that I'll be in a much better position to succeed as a result as well.

I understand where you're coming from. My mom never wanted me to work in high school, and still doesn't now, because I'm supposed to focus on school. I babysat a bit in high school but that was it. I had my first real job last summer. And I have my 2nd one this summer, with another lined up for the coming school year. My mom doesn't like it, but I told her I have to get job experience. At your age, you really don't have to work yet, but if you really want to, I'm sure you can come up with valid reasons to persuade your dad.

If he provides cash for you. I wouldn't worry about getting a job, unless you just want to have something to do.  The small pitance you can make is probably nothing compared to what he makes.

Well, I used to do yardwork around my neighborhood untill I was 14 then I got a job as a dishwasher. I got some allowance for doing chores for a while but if I wanted more than just candy or comics I had to make the extra money to buy it myself.

If you're a teen, getting a summer job when you're 16 or older is fine. If you don't have to work then don't bother working every summer. Just make sure you work atleast 1 summer before going off to college. I was in your shoes where my parents didn't want me to work, but once I got to college and tried looking for a summer job, I couldn't find one in my field cause I had no work experience. Luckily I managed to get hooked up by my friend's dad and then the year after that I opted for a year long internship in order to get some good experience.

You should start working to gain preperation for later on, and to earn some money. If he really doesnt want you to work, maybe he should compensate you...

Do a couple of evenings a week flipping burgers or doing retail and you can afford to do things on weekends without relying on your parents for an allowance. It's quite liberating. Get used to the freedom, cos later on work sucks.

I don't think it's going to completely ruin it, but I'd rather not. Besides, I don't think you can work over here. I think it's legal, but they're not exactly hiring teenagers over here, mostly college people. Not even mcdonald's.

IMO working a few days a week, between 8-16 hours a week wouldn't be a bad thing. Just don't over do it and forget about the social life and school work

WTH,how is working say every Saturday going to ruin your childhood? lol this is one of the funniest things i've ever read.

You work for money which enables you to do more fun things in your childhood,so it actually makes your life more fun and you also get 'experiance' with all kinds of people and 'things'.

You should try getting a Saturday job for a couple of weeks and if you don't like it fair enough don't do it,it's not like it's going to ruin the rest of your life LOL

I think having a job as a teen is a good idea as long as it doesn't affect your education.  I homeschool, so I work nearly full time.  Maybe you should try getting a job with about 10 hours a week.
