I don't absolutely hate it. Infact, some of it I like. I like Kanye West's Stronger, Love Lockdown (this is more techno than rap though), Flobots' Handlebars, and alot of the Black Eyed Peas' songs. But what I don't understand is how 99% of other rap interests people. I'm pretty fine with hip-hop, since it seems to be more instrument oriented, but most rap songs are just talking and that's it. And then there are the repetitive things like Crank That. Overall, most rap gives me a headache, and is just irritating noise to me.

So can someone explain to me the appeal of rap, or recommend some good rap?

The rhythm, the beat, and the lyrics are what attracts me to rap. Rap is basically poetry, but with a catchy tune slapped on to it.

How do you expect to like it if you're listening to that mainstream bulls*** rap?

Listen to some Nas, Lupe Fiasco, The Roots, Aesop Rock, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang (and a few solo albums from their members), Immortal Technique, and also ever since watching Entourage, i've started to like a few Saigon songs, so give him a try too.

The simple answer is to each their own. Metal destroys my brain cells but I am not going to say it sucks. Why? Because I am not that full of myself to think my opinion is all that matters

Lebbin

Well hip-hop isn't really music, its a culture which includes rap music, grafitti, style of dress and breakdancing.

Personally it doesn't seem like you have listened to much rap.

I never used to like rap but now it's maybe my favorite genre. I personally love the beats but I also love rapping in and of itself. Great rappers (none of which you listed) tend to have great flow and clever rhymes. A great rapper can make any subject interesting. Also its music from a very different perspective usually one bread from the inner city, these songs tell stories and can be full of emotion and containing interesting subject matter not found in most other music. Also alot it's just very fun and rapping can be done over anything from a jazz band or over a drum machine.

I would say check out The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Wu-Tang Clan, Atmosphere, Brother Ali, Aesop Rock, Deltron, Blackalicious, Cunninlynguists.

I consider rap music, but I just don't enjoy it. I don't mind listening to it if someone else has it on, but I wouldn't listen to it if I had a choice. Nothing against people who listen to rap. Well actually I can't stand "gangsta" kids. :P To each their own I guess.

I think Kikouken is saying that there really isn't an exact reason for anybody to like anything, everyone thinks differently and has different opinions.

Aesop Rock is signed to Def Jux, which is an indie label. Though you could argue that being on an indie label doesn't mean you can't be mainstream (The Smiths, Arctic Monkeys, etc.).

Saigon is definitely not a mainstream rapper. The only reason a non underground listener would have ever heard of him is from Entourage. That definitely doesn't make him mainstream.

Yeah saying that all bands signed to a indie record aren't mainstream is a terrible blanket statement.....there are plenty of exceptions.

True. I have heard of him before, just never really listened to his stuff, but during season 2 when I heard "The Letter P" on Entourage I just started to listen to his stuff and I liked it.

I like underground and 90's hip hop. It's much different than the stuff that is out on the radio today, which is more or less just pop music like Britney Spears or something.

Things that you don't like about rap is what appeals to others.

It's just like your preference with food, video games, cars, or anything else: your tastes are going to be different from others.

A lot deal with and poverty and its interesting to see (the good) rappers connect metaphors and analogies to current issues.

Theres also diss rapping (most famously portrayed by Tupac V. Biggie)

I personally like Eminem and so do a lot of people probably because they can connect with a lot of what he says. Check out this song: http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=bqP1TwuBiK8
