So my boyfriend and I are being forced to vacate our apartment because of a termination with no cause. We have 30 days to leave. The management office told us if other apartments call them they can only answer yes or no answers about why we left. So basically my question was what should we say to our next apt managers if they ask why we left? We were thinking we tell them we got the notice and we don't know why we got the notice but we didn't fight it because we have been wanting to move for a while. We just don't know if this answer is good enough or not. Do you guys have any other options as to what we could say?

Were you on a lease or month-to-month? Check out the laws in your state. Some states allow the landlord to terminate your residency without cause if you are month-to-month, but as far as I am aware none allow them to terminate a lease without cause.

@br0kenrabbit. Thank you for your reply. We do have a month to month. And we will check out the laws in our state.

@thegerg. We would tell the truth, but we need to find an apt and we can be denied because of why we were asked to vacate.

Smells like bullsh*t. Apartment managers don't terminate your lease for "no cause". You had to have done something, especially if they're only giving you 30 days to vacate the premises. Did you not pay your rent? Did you break the terms of the lease?

If there truly was "no cause" for your eviction, then seek legal counsel and fight them on it. Surely, your leasing agreement would have something written in there about eviction notices and when they're given out.

@thegerg: Yeh that is a good idea. We are going to do that.

@jasean79: There was a reason, but we don't want to tell them the reason as we need an apt. And we always paid our rent. Never late. Always on time. We did the break the terms of our lease but we don't want to tell them that.

Bingo! You broke the terms of the lease...so there WAS a cause. What did you do to break the lease? The severity of that answer will determine if you should lie about it to your next renter.

I'm guessing they ate gravy in the bedroom. My last lease had a no gravy in the bedroom clause.

You just answered your own question on whether you should be truthful or not when you can't even be truthful on a forum full of strangers as anonymous person..

So you claim at first there was no reason but now suddenly there's a reason.

I won't even bother asking what you did. Boo ma'am. Boo.

There is never "no cause" to a landlord ending a lease. They are required by law to provide one.

@danyopizlesgirl:

maybe they thought your presence threatened property values, though they could never say it

one reason though maybe is they plan on selling the property, or maybe converting apartments to condos, I don't know where you live but where I lived apartment renters usually get an excuse, and by law must be offered a first shot crack to buy at the asking price of the unit, and in the case of selling the property provide renters with financial assistance, which was nothing much, like $500 I think I read somewhere, if similar laws exist where you live then maybe they're trying to get out of paying evicted tenants money

Why not just say we were looking for another apartment closer to our jobs? (Or families, or.....)

Or if it was something simple like "the manager said our child made too much noise," or "he said we made too much noise" or "we left our laundry in the washing machine too long" or "the old lady next door complained about us and she was the manager's aunt".

WHATEVER you did to provoke - try NOT to do it again. Lesson learned.
