Do you think that the Earth's moon can be made habitable to sustain human life? Is it scientifically possible? Personally, I think we can terraform the moon, but it will take hundreds of years to get the right technology to terraform. But I also want to hear your say on whether we can make the moon habitable and your reasons why.

There is no reason why colonizing on other planets isn't humanity's primary concern right now. If not the total change of a planet/moon to something like Earth, then at least some space bubbles. C'mon people, we're going to die here if we don't start moving!

If mars can only barely hold an atmoshpere then i would doubt that the movie ever can. At best maybe humans can dig into the moon to create some protection from meteors and cosmic rays.

What movie..? Also, I am pretty sure its possible to actually create an atmoshere similar to Earth's.

It might be possible but it would be too expensive to do it at this time. Maybe in another thousand years?

The moon is too small to hold onto an atmosphere. Even if it could, it has no magnetic field so you'd still be exposed to the more dangerous phenomena of space and the sun.

The moon's low mass would make it REALLY hard to maintain a remotely Earth-like atmosphere. Getting the atmosphere there would be a HUGE undertaking, far beyond any human undertaking in history, and it's atmosphere would tend to dissipate relatively quickly due to the low mass of the moon.

Duh, Total Recall already has it all figured out. We just need to find the atmosphere machine under the surface and bam, weve got an atmosphere. I know the movie takes place one mars, but I'm sure there is one in the moon too.

Even if you could generate an atmosphere on the moon, the moon doesn't have enough gravity to hold on to it. The solar wind would take it right off.

I don't the the moon has enough gravity to have an atmosphere that could support life (or at least life as it is on earth). If you want to talk about mars, that is a completely different story. There are scientist who say if you could melt the ice in the polar regons, that you could have a atmosphere suitable for life very soon. They say that in a matter of 3000 years, it could support human life.

The moon does not have enough gravity to hold an atmosphere for very long. And I read somewhere that the moon does have an atmosphere but its only like 5 feet thick. So if you stand up you die.

It could be formed in 3000 years yes, but significantly less if human technology and people edge it along at a much faster pace. We could get it suitable for human life in less than 1000 if we used the right technologies.

I understand what you are talking about, I think some sort of domes may be a good choice for a controlled environment on the moon too, but didnt Bio Domes fail on earth?

that would be cool, but then again the moon doesnt have oxygen or water for humans to live there...

thats what they're trying to do to Mars since they found water and oxygen...

If we could get off of earth, and be actually safe in space, it would be alot safer to be on the moon or in a colony in orbit than earth in times of war and or when the earths atmosphere gets even worse.

Those colonies get their resources from Earth. In times of war, they will become more and more limited to 'non-Earth dwellers', and as the Earth's climate becomes more ferocious, so will resources.

Terraforming mars would take too long to be of any use, and I doubt it's even possible to terraform the moon.

We should instead focus our efforts on long range space travel and FTL technology in the hope of finding other earth-like planets that can support life.

The moon and mars are out of the question in terms of terraforming them to be like Earth. Mars does not have enough mass to support an athmosphere and Mar's core is almost frozen so there is no protection from gama rays which would kill you. The only planet I see as being habitable for humans in a way that earth is Venus. Venus has almost the exact weight and has an active core however the huge and deadly athmosphere would have to be removed. I have no idea how such a feat could be done. Oh and as far as I know venus has no water so that is a big problem. And for mars we would have to give it more mass by crashing asteroids from the nearby belt to make it habitable. It would give it more mass and also create greenhouse gasses to warm the planet. I don't know which one is easier making mars or venus habitable.

This won't happen until the invasion of the Buggers is over. After that, we jack their technology and colonize mad solar systems.

True to an extent, but by colonies i'm talking things like the ones from Gundam SEED, capable of holding multiple cities. Earth(soil) can be moved, and as far as I know its not impossible to make your own water is it? I'm talking about colonies big enough to have everything they need to support themselves practicaly lol.

Then its settled. Earth, and humans, are doomed. We didn't get out there fast enough, and now we're done for. There is no hope left for our species.

There are actually two opportunites for colonization in our own solar system that I didn't see mentioned here, neither of which would require terraforming.

One is the moon Europa, which quite possibly has a liquid ocean beneath its outer layer of ice.

The other would be the upper atmosphere of Venus, which has a pressure and temperature very close to earth, and in which breathable gasses float. Floating cities could be constructed in the upper atmosphere of Venus.

The answer is simple, cover the moon in a giant double paned casing, the outer shell can double as the biggest billboard ever.
