So my girlfriend never really wants to talk on the phone only text... she's really talkative when we're in person together though...

Has texting become a new substitute for talking on the phone or is she just shy on the phone?

Some people are just uncomfortable talking on the phone. I hate texting. It takes ten minutes to write a single sentence. :x

Texting takes more energy than talking, hence texting doesn't get so much crap. That or she gives coy 1 word answers.

That's true but when you talk on the phone you have more communication and get more comfortable with each other... texting doesn't really strenghthen your relationship at all

I refuse to have conversations through texting. Sure, I'll send a message or two about once a week but that's all I'll do.

personally i find that insulting. I always expect people close to me to call me. Not texting, not msn, not facebook (unless your travelling so calling is expensive, then i understand) . Its like a demotion. Its less personal.

I don't mind texting, but talking is just so much better because you can communicate much faster and tone changes everything. Through text it can be hard to tell when someone is joking or not and that can lead to problems.

i for one dont like talking on the phone, i dunno why but i just would rather avoid it because awkward silences are just lame texting on however should be on a need to kno basis. like "meet u at 3" or something like that, not a long convo. i rather do all my communicating in person

I don't like texting, its like talking in subtitles. But I can see the benefit of it. If you are doing something you can carry on a conversation without having to stop and answer the phone and talk for 10 minutes straight. and it is more quiet.

Here's how I used to do it.

I would give them a "good morning" text as soon as I woke up. Then I'd call them, or talk to them momentarily after I got off of school or work, and then text random messages during the day saying silly stuff like "I know you we're doing (such and such) today, hope that's going well, Love you, talk to you later."

And I'd usually call them after 9, for those free minutes. It worked for me and my exes.

I text most of the time. Im not a big talker so its easier than calling and getting draged into a whole conversation that I dont care about. I can say my one or two sentences and be done with all of it.

WhiteSnake5000

Agreed... in spite of Unknown Hero's astute observation that TC won't have to hear his gf complain.

Aside from the fact that I got a phone plan that doesn't include texting (as I don't use it), I just don't see what's so hard about calling someone, relaying whatever info you need to relay and hanging up. And if I want to have an actual conversation, I'll go see them and do it in person, where it's best to have conversations. If I'm at work or something? Maybe I'll just do my job until the whistle blows and THEN I'll go out and socialize.

As most around here do, I love technology... but I'm really starting to resent these trends that have us typing all day to each other and not having any meaningful face-to-face communication, and that computers and telecommunications devices are all linked together and they're everwhere and ugh... sometimes I think about just moving to Dharamsala and chilling with the Dalai Lama for a while, get away from this Brave New World for a while.

I prefer talking, but she's probably prefers texting because she can talk to multiple people at the same time that way.

Talking is more heart to heart. Texting is easier. Depends on my mood, I guess, or whether or not I have a girlfriend, which is no.

I don't really like talking on the phone. I seem to always speak as soon as the other person starts speaking or sometimes they don't listen and just blabber it's okay talking to my girlfriend though, but i'd rather text her since you can do it in your own time and actually think before replying.
