I know many people start college today or some other day in the coming weeks. I went online to see which textbooks I needed and put them all in the cart. To my surprise, the total came out to be $500.00. All these textbooks are used too! If I were to get them new, the costs would go over $650.00. College is too darn expensive. Anyways, how much did you or will you have to spend on books/textbooks?

So far, $195.00, but that's because one of the classes might not even use a book, and another class is just a continuation to another, which I already have the book too. If it weren't for damn math, I would have spend a record $20 this semester.

But that's not till the end of the semester. Not to mention I pay bills and tuition myself.

welcome to college, and yes, book cost + school tuition = good bye any money you have i have 4 classes, two which are math, so those two alone ought to cost me around 300 on books alone.

Yeah, they're pretty expensive. I'll probably spend $300-$400 on books this semester, but I'll sell them back for ~1/2 the cost at the end. Edit: forget to mention I'll be buying used.

Every school of any decent size has a network of folks who buy and sell books to each other at bookstore "re-buy" prices. Find such a network and tap in. You could save thousands.

It's the largest book market in the world. Everyone who goes to college needs to buy them (most of the time), and you have little to no say over what you are charged. It's a beautiful thing for those who are in that business.

Then all you can do is either bite the bullet and pay or just don't buy the books for classes you don't have to own them for.

My parents paid like $550, and I still have to get my biology books. The school is just going to charge them on our total tuition bill.

They should make some kind of law limiting the price of school books and also limiting the number of books that professors can mandate.

Keep in mind, just because a professor recommened a textbook does not mean you need it. I don't buy textbooks at all for easy courses.

Local bookstores sometimes sell college textbooks at reasonable rates. You also don't have to pay shipping that way.

Buy them used on amazon or barnes and noble. Seriously, I got a book for $100 that was selling for $180 in my college's book store. And it was in essentially new condition. Used is the way to go, specially the ones in new or like new conditions. You can get up to 50% off and it'll be like new. And yeah, if you're really lucky, the colleges buy back policy could make it so that you only spend a net $50 or less on each book.

No more than about $100-110 CAD. Though, I am an arts student. Science students always get the short end of the stick when it comes to textbooks, always requiring the newest edition for the course.

Though, I look at them as an investment, since they go into my personal library when I'm done with them. That and I can claim them on my income taxes.

It gets really bad when you hit the majority of your core classes. GE textbooks usually aren't that bad, but your Major specific books will be a real pain to buy lol.

I forgot to say that you should buy the international version online if you can get it. They're insanely cheaper than the hardcovered books in North America.

yeah, buying textbooks sucks. i never end up getting any that the school store will buy back. amazon and the competition it allows is like a kick in the nuts. my $200 textbook ends up with a market value of 15 bucks.

Text books are expensive no matter where you go. It's even worse for science majors(like me), who often have those big, blocky chemistry, physics, or geology textbooks. I remember when I was a freshman I must have paid $700 or more for textbooks. This semester I only bought 4 books, but already that cost me almost $300! On top of that, one of the textbooks that I ordered from my school's bookstore(that I dearly and quickly need) isn't even in yet. And I ordered that almost 3 weeks ago. :? I have to pay for all my own textbooks though. That's the law in my parents' eyes.:(

Go to amazon and buy them used. You can buy $70 textbooks for $6-$11 used. Depends on the book though.

I'm in my 3rd year of college, and textbook costs do add up. Some of my friends are fortunate enough to have financial aid that pays for textbooks. Whenever I can find a price that is cheaper elsewhere compared to my college's campus store I take it. It sucks when you buy a brand new book and can't sell it back afterwards, because the school is no longer using it. Books costs me around $370 this semester, my university started a rental program so I was able to rent 3 of them for much less than buying. Price would have been around $600 buying used.

I recommed Chegg.com. I used it last semester and it was great. You rent your textbooks for way cheaper prices. They ship them to you pretty quick, and when the semester is over you simply ship them back the books (for free) in the same box they came in. Plus, for every book you rent, they plant a tree! So its good for the environment. You can aslo sell old textbooks there.

Trust me, I will be using it again this semester and probably every semester from now on. You seriously save A LOT of money.

(Although they probably dont have ALL the books you might look for, but the hard textbooks are all probably in there)

I bought my first set of college textbooks a little less than a week ago. I went to my university's bookstore and bought all used. I had to buy seven books and the total was around $350. I was pleased. They're expensive, but I think I did well, considering the university estimated that students would spend anywhere from $500-$800 on textbooks each semester.

You should check Amazon.com since some books are cheaper on there or you can try Chegg.com where you can rent textbooks for a semester and then return them. I'm gonna rent mine within the next week or so since it'll save me a lot of money. :D

You can ask your Professor if he/she has any extra copies of the text and ask to buy for cost (Did this with some of my Business professors), buy used (Hopefully no extra workshops needed) or see if the Library has available copies for certain about of hours. Another than that I don't know what to tell you.
