The amount of hate the Speed Racer movie is getting is just unbelievable.

I can't really understand why either. The movie dosen't really seem have a good plot, but then again, it's not really supposed to. This is an adaptation of a Japanese cartoon with race cars, and the way in which it was directed looks really similar to the cartoon (albeit in a future setting). The hate I'm seeing from fans is much worse than what I'm seeing with the critics, which is unusual for a movie.

From the commercials, it looks like a children's movie with crappy animation.

I won't be seeing it.

Not that Speed Racer is going to be as good as Star Wars, but this looks like an enjoyable, unpretentious night at the movies.

Not that Speed Racer is going to be as good as Star Wars, but this looks like an enjoyable, unpretentious night at the movies.

Exactly. The movie is being marketed for kids, the commercials, are being played continiously on Nick and Cartoon Network, and it has a family friendly PG rating. It's not a bad thing...it's just not a movie that's aimed for me. Besides, it's not like the original cartoon was high art, anyway.

What kind of pisses me off is that nobody seems to think it isn't their cup of tea. They simply think it's a sure-to-suck movie when everything they cite as bad about it is completely intentional. It's not like the Epic Movie guys passing off some simplistic references as jokes in order to make a quick buck, the Wachowski Brothers (I'm still not convinced Larry got a sex change) have put a lot of real passion into this movie and clearly have the target audience rather than their own wallets in mind.

Besides, Emile Hirsch has proven repeatedly to be an exceptional actor, so obviously the camply line delivery is due to choice rather than a lack of talent.

I think it's interesting that the Wachowskis would make something like this, especially for such a younger audience. I don't know if I'd see it in theaters, but I'd at least give it a rent once it hits DVD.

I remember when Speed Racer used to give on Cartoon Network. I always changed the channel because it looked so old and boring. The movie seems fun but I don't think i will be watching it.Ilived

I've seen the new, updated cartoon that just premiered on Nicktoons Network, and believe me when I say that the original looks way better than this new version. It looks like a cross between horrible flash animation and awful CGI you'd find in a PSOne game.

Well, the show was corny and it was still pretty good.

i was interested in watching the movie until i realized that Speed had a brother. That completely killed it for me. Granted, i wasnt a huge fan of the show but i still have memories of watching it and it was a pretty good cartoon. But i think something as story driven as the fact he had a sister not a brother kinda ruined it for me. but who knows.

I learned to appreciate the multiple metaphors that the series as a whole was trying to capture, and thus better appreciate the movie in that context, even if it wasn't as entertaining to watch as the first 2. I thought it sucked at first, but have since changed my mind about it. It's hard to explain, but just suffice it to say that I now see it as a fitting end to the series whereas before I didn't. It took me a lot of thinking about everything that happened in it to get to that point though.
