It pains me that we humans are so destructive. Still now I listen to people talking about progress as if it is a metaphysical entity that we need to worship unconditionally. Well this is what this so called "progress" everyone is so fond of brings. I hope we are all satisfied with more comfortable lifes while our well-being as a species and that of the world slips through our hands.

I think we've made loads of progress and most of it is good too. But the demands that capitalism makes on the environment (ie green is not cost efficient) might kill us all!

The "evolution" of the Aral Sea

Yes we are too many and we keep reproducing like viruses killing their host. I don't see a solution other than a massive extinction of humans, maybe a big war like you say.

Yes I am. That's why I said "we". Even if I become as frugal as possible things are not going to change though. We are already doomed. A real change doesn't come from people deciding to safe some more energy. The change will be more drastic, a change to the foundations of social norms. If it doesn't come we are dead and there's nothing anyone can do (well maybe world leaders could do something significant but I'm afraid those are the least interested).

Humans are terrible. We should be considered an invasive species, heh. So long as the population continues to triple each decade, it'll catch up. Then famine and diminishing resources will strike along with a plague -- AND THEN THE ORCS SHALL FIGHT THE NIGHT ELVES! HARK! A new age dawns upon us...

the process can still be reversed, if uzbekistan decides to pitch in, which they won't unless a lot of global media attention starts pointing their fingers at them. The kazakhs I think are already in the process of rectifying some of the damage done on their part, territorially speaking.

I was talking to a friend about all this stuff and he just recently started playing the game Pathologic. The game is said to be a simulator for situations of disaster and anguish that will come when society starts to decay. Interesting enough the game is russian, received terrible reviews in the west but many awards in Russia. The Soviet Union were the ones directly responssible for what's happening to the Aral Sea although the destruction of the environment is a generalized problem.

I don't think it's coincidence, maybe the russians saw what its happening now before all of us becoming aware of the real dimensions of the problem. It's funny that they are have the intuition to prepare people with "simulations" of disaster. Most western games simulate war while the russians are already simulating how to survive.

Well anyway, some of you may want to try the game to be prepared :). Here is a good synopsis about the game.

If you read the article the sea isn't drying up due to global warming, its drying up because a Soviet project from the 80s diverted the rivers that fed the sea in order to boost cotton production :|

Yeah but he has a point. More pople require more resources. Cotton is just one of those resources. As more people need those resources more stuff like this is going to happen, we will need to modify the environment in bigger and bigger ways in order to keep up with production. The Aral Sea is just the tip of the iceberg.

Seriously, life is precious, we're taking steps to correct our mistakes, whether they'll be enough who knows, but there's no sense in hoping we're all dead, it might effect the environment more if we're gone, imagine how some toxic waste facilities and chemical labs would far without humans around to maintain them. Oil reserves, gas, toxic chemical, all would decimate mass portions of the earth without our maintenance, yes they wouldn't be here if humans never came to be but we are here and, for the most part, we prevent the worst of the worst from happening.

Well it all really depends on where his power comes from doesn't it? If its wind, nuclear, solar then I don't see why he should be concerned about powering his home and everyday devices. In face powering any appliance, electronic, etc, wouldn't be at all terrible if we eradicated coal and oil power plants and replaced them with nuclear plants, hell coal plants even produce more harmful radiation and radioactive materials than nuclear plants do.

Capitalism is pretty illogical if you think about it. In theory it sounds nice but no one never talks about one of the most obvious mistakes in the theoretical foundations regarding the practice of capitalism. Evey company and capitalist society demands growth. It makes sense because you want companies earning more next year than this one and progress demands more capital (which means more production and consumption) every year. What no one asks is how is it possible for something to grow constantly on a finite space and with finite resources? The answer is that you can't, it is scientifically, mathematically and common sensically impossible. But still the way capitalism works requires that impossible thing to be possible. Anyone can see that is not going to end well.

...but this was done under communist Russia, wasn't it? :|

Also, lets look at China and how horrible they are to the environment.

I know capitalism is "doomed" and all that stuff, but lets keep stuff relevant and bash communism, Russia, China, and stuff for just once.

Also, "Green" businesses are cost efficient in the long run. It is the initial capital that keeps many business, and the captial needed to renovate old businesses, from doing it. Conserving resources though (energy, water, fuel) is always cheaper than not doing so.

Of course, any economical system which demands the constant growth and production of goods is doomed to fall in the same inconsistencies. I just talk about capitalism because it is the most prevalent economical system now and it works exactly in such an inconsistent way. I'm sure communism wouldn't be any different, just look at China.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not particularly against capitalism. Capitalism is just a necessity to make societies with so many people work as the agricultural revolution was necessary back when civilization as we know it started. I just don't think it is sustainable in the least. We are living on a very fragile and illogical system because that's the only way for all of this to work in some way for the meantime.

I don't think it'll get that far. We'll probably blow each other up by then or some catastrophic famine/disease/climate change will occur. It seems the Earth has ways of reverting to old states through things like Ice Ages, heh. I guess we'll just see....WHEN I INVENT A TIME MACHINE LAD!

Yep, Matrix is a very revealing movie :). You notice how Neo starts as the revolutionary (The One) against the foundation of the system, then he has no possibility but to turn himself into an axiom of that very system he was trying to destroy. The moral of the story is that you can't win, no matter what you do real change is not within anyones power. Is just the nature of the species to be like a virus.

Interesting what you say about reverting to old states. That could be an interpretation of what the mayans predicted for december 2012. The end of a cycle not the end of the world. We are already experiencing changes both socially and environmentally that influence everyones psyche and suggests something big is going to happen.

Many ancient civilizations included the one the whole western civilizations own their cultural heritage: the indoeuropeans, thought of time as being cyclic. We took the notion of time as being linear from semites though.

It's definitely plausible if ice ages do truly occur. The climate does seem rather.....drastic lately. Coldest winter in Florida on record -- watch it also be the hottest summer.... Everyone, prepare! Humanity will hang by a thread whence THE FROST COMETH!

And people still claim humans have a minimal impact on the environment.
